We've been here before with this composer, but maybe this'll prove a bit more attractive...

I note that in his review of the reissue of Andrew Penny's recording of German's 2nd Symphony on Naxos at MusicWeb that Gary Higginson says: <<To me, this is the finest British symphony before Elgar.>>
https://www.musicwebinternational.com/2023/03/german-symphony-2-naxos/

An interesting opinion, I thought, so I dug out my copy of John Wilson's recording on Dutton and I must say it's a very fine work in an idiom which certainly has certain pre-echoes of Elgar (it dates from 1893). Whether's it's superior to the best of Stanford, Parry or Cliffe (or Cowen, Sullivan, etc.) I couldn't say, but it's a view that has one thinking...

Sounds rather exciting:

<<In the last decade, research in the Genoa archives has revealed a series of important manuscripts, one of which is Saverio Mercadante's Messa solenne. This magnificent score requires four vocal soloists, a male choir – women were then forbidden to sing in church – and a large orchestra with extensive concertante roles for cor anglais and violin. It was premiered in January 1868, two years before Mercadante's death, and shows the composer's artistic maturity at its peak: opulent orchestration, extensive counterpoint, intricate instrumental textures, rich lyricism and fugal mastery. This world première recording amplifies the significance of the Genoese musical tradition.>>

Composers & Music / Vierne Organ Symphony No.1 (1899)
Saturday 11 February 2023, 16:46
Just recently I heard the last movement toccata from this magnificent work for the first time and realised that this was probably the successor to the famous movement from Widor's 5th Organ symphony. I managed to track down Daniel Chorzempa's recording from 1987 which is spectacular.

The problem I find with Vierne is the increasingly chromatic nature of his later music, so this 1st Organ Symphony suits me fine. However, should I venture further into his organ music - and, if so, how far?

This is interesting as we have very little of Rudorff's orchestral output. This overture, first  published in 1868, is fairly conventional, though thoroughly enjoyable, with only the occasional hint of the more radical rhythmic wildness that characterises his much later 3rd Symphony (pub. 1910).
