Title: Now we have two Gounods
Post by: BerlinExpat on Tuesday 08 October 2019, 21:14
There's the Gounod we know from 1818-1893 and now according to Palazetto Bru Zane on the front cover of their new recording of the first version of Faust we have Charles Gounod version 1859! Some mischievous imp has placed the first version date direct under the name of the composer rather than under the title or a placing where it would be clear that the opera is meant and not the composer.

Let's hope that, like the "new" Coca Cola, the new version of Gounod doesn't catch on. I'd hate to lose the original and best!

I remember repetiteuring with Mid Wales Opera some years ago where they performed this version of Faust. The baritone was quite miffed that "Avant de quitter ces lieux" was absent though he did have a duet with Marguerite that isn't in the revised version. Siebel has a really lovely little aria that also didn't make it.
