Composers & Music / Edward Benjamin Scheve (1865–1924)
Thursday 08 February 2018, 06:11
While surfing Youtube for UC's, I came across a reference to Scheve, German born American composer.  Came to this country and was Professor of Music at Grinnell Collge in Grinnell, Iowa.  His most major work appears to have been a large oratorio "The Death and Resurrection of Christ" published in 1908.   There is a video of the final 11 minute of this lovely work in Russia several years ago and can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0or0mEV6PdU.

Apparently he wrote a symphony, 2 concertos and other works.

I suspect that the entire Moscow performance must have been taped but can find no trace, at least on youtube.

Can anyone shed some light on this composer/work?

Jerry

He had symphonic pieces based on Jerome Kern's music, also a Stephen Foster Commemorative Symphony and his Violin Concerto was on an old LP.

It hasn't shown up on NML yet either.  Nor has the Mayer Piano Trios.   Or the Holbrooke 3rd Symphony.   Or the Graener Cello Concerto.......

If the first piano concerto is opus 36, where did I get the idea that the recording I have of #1 is in Ab and I have it as opus 85??

For those of us who dig Perosi, I see that Bongiovonni has released a recording of his Suite #2 - Venezia and some other shorter goodies......  long work, just short of 40 minutes!
