Composers & Music / Re: Vasily Kalafati (1869-1942)

My copy finally escaped the Spanish postal system yesterday.  I have played it all through once, and the third movement of the symphony - which I think is the most striking -a second time.  Not sure that I would have awarded second place in that competition to the Legends piece. It meandered for ages.

I have kept hold of my thousand LPs and also my B and O turntable. So you are not alone.................

Raff, Brull, and Lachner would be on my shortlist of  masters whose work should be heard in concert-halls. Only Raff out of these is decently served by the music labels and I would rank him alongside Brahms in terms of stature.  Didn´t I once read somewhere that there is a Victorian novel out there where his famous March gets central casting?  That would be a book to savour.

I must thank you for the link to Gerd´s rendition.   I had heard, and was dissatisfied with, the earlier MIDI one.  But this is so much better and I am listening to it with pleasure as I type.

I wanted to enjoy the Kopylov but was let down,I´m afraid. My copy of the Kalafati is somewhere on the way to me in Spain. I hope it arrives soon.

Lachner is one of my favourite composers.  Unlike Schumann,I can readily see why he won that prize for his Fifth.  I listen to it again and again. And his Eighth is up there in my favourite top 20 symphonies of all time. I am sure that Schubert would have approved of his light touch in the Finale. I do hope that cpo will issue a recording of the Sixth. That would be a treat!

Composers & Music / Re: Tomas Breton (1850-1923)

Copies turn up from time to time on amazon. I bought my copy of the Breton Symphonies there last year.  I crosscheck  amazon.com,amazon.co.uk,and amazon.de, and works sometimes appear out of the blue on one of these three but not on the others. I found my copy of the Abert Columbus Symphony on amazon.de a few weeks ago.

Grateful for the tip on where to purchase the Breton CD, and pleased to report that trito.es has already delivered it
