Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Music by Evgeny Svetlanov
Friday 23 February 2024, 16:00
Worldcat also lists a recording by Svetlanov and Grach of two sonatinas for violin and piano (by Svetlanov? composed apparently 1948-9, and available also on YouTube. Grach btw was born 1930 and is apparently still alive?...)

May I hope that's a typo for 2026, though your last statement is unfortunately still true :(

I see, and their 6 new releases of the month are out at that (of which this is no.2 in order of physical placement). Anyhow, good news! (Ah, yep, says Recording: Gewandhaus Leipzig..." on the back label from the jpc site. Hrm, recorded just under 2 years before release- arguably not bad in general, and I don't mean just for cpo.)

Composers & Music / Re: Ferdinand Thieriot
Monday 19 February 2024, 15:12
I am assuming "Suite für Violoncello G-Dur" is with orchestra, not solo. :) Btw the op.85 organ works have been uploaded in typeset at IMSLP as have the published parts of, I think, both of his 2 published string quartets... (nope, just no.2. Interesting that no.1 in A is op.83- and Gernsheim's no.5 is in A, op.83... the Rieter-Biedermann 1905 parts of Thieriot's op.83 are at the (central) library @ Zürich whose library catalog doesn't give much information about them.)

I don't recall anyone here ever reviewing that Gernsheim CD. I listened to the first movement of that E-flat quintet (so far) and was very impressed (though its close connection to late Brahms could be what you're referring to, for all I know...) That said, looking forward to giving the Thieriot work a try.

Thanks for the correction!!

Apparently his eldest son went and entered just that profession...

My mistake, but still, the part of the sentence in which Leonid (Sabaneyeff) describes Triodin as distinctly weaker than those composers makes it still seem less promising in context.--

The purchase by Universal also made many of those recordings e.g. finally available to stream over Amazon Music, too...

The SWR2 Music of the Week podcast for this week is Ariane Matiakh conducting the Orch. of Gast in Mayer's last surviving symphony, in a concert from last September.

"Sounds promising!"
Yeah, the full sentence, not so much.

Wait, how'd we get to Henri Herz? (Oh never mind, I see where he was mentioned earlier.)
If you're considering a reconstruction of Herz's 6th piano concerto with chorus from the reduction (whose orchestral parts have been lost, I believe), that would be fun to hear, yes, I believe :D In the meanwhile of course, thanks for this!!!

Composers & Music / Re: A Myaskovsky Clarinet Concerto?

It might not be a concerto for clarinet and strings originally, either :) (This does not aid identification!)

That looks like maybe the 2nd ever recording of his chamber music. My. It never rains but it pours (no matter one's opinion of his music, which I've neither seen nor heard yet.) According to Worldcat, the contents of the 2023 disc (or eMusic) is "Violin sonata, op. 2 (23:06) -- Piano trio, op. 8 (26:44) -- Cello sonata, op. 42 (27:50)." -- and here is the YouTube playlist ; I'm not sure if it exists as a physical CD, but it does exist in several electronic formats. A search reveals that these were performed and perhaps recorded to the 2023 recording at the 7th Krakow Music Salon festival. (The original manufacturer offers it here.)
