Composers & Music / Re: Arrangement Suggestions?
Tuesday 25 June 2013, 13:14
Arranging Raff's Sinfonietta for wind quintet would indeed be a bit of a challenge. In my opinion it can't be done without losing a lot of the original composition. Ditto for the octet and even the sextet. I have done some arranging myself and in my experience the best you can choose are pieces for piano or piano duet. Theodore Gouvy has composed a lot of sonates and other pieces for piano duet and some of them are probably suitable to arrange for wind quintet.

This has become a silly discussion! I sincerely hope it is not the result of UC' s revised remit. :(

According to IMDb the original music of this TV mini-series was composed by John Keane. Maybe a bit disapointing?

You must download both files before trying to open either one of them. Both files must be in the same folder. Then open the first file and the complete recording will open.
I did what you said, but none of my unpacking programms can handle this. Which programm should I use?

Composers & Music / Re: Vaclav Dobias Symphony No.2
Friday 30 March 2012, 21:13
There is a podcast of Dobias' 2nd Symphony available on the Spanish National Radio Radio Clasica in the weekly programm Los Raros, which, by the way,  is a very interesting programm.

The Swedish Classical Radio will broadcast Sigurd von Koch's Piano Quintet from 1916 on December 14th in their programm "Klassisk förmiddag" (10.00 - 12.00 am) : http://sverigesradio.se/sida/tabla.aspx?programid=2562&date=2011-12-14
Sigurd was the father of Erland von Koch and, unlike his son, died at young age. His Violin Sonata in E Minor (1913) seems to be his only work that has been recorded.

Latvian,
When I try to download Ivanovs Symphony No. 7 I get an error message. I don't know whether I am the only one who is having this problem. If not, could you repair it? I would love to hear this symphony.

Composers & Music / Re: Unsung Romantic Horn Music
Sunday 30 October 2011, 11:21
In chamber music there are quite a few romantic - more or less unsung - works in which the horn plays a prominent role, often in combination with the clarinet, for instance
- Reinecke: Trio in B flat major Op. 274 (clarinet, horn & piano)
- Kahn: Quintet Op. 54 (clarinet, horn, violin, cello & piano)
- Fibich: Quintet Op. 42 (same combination)
- von Baussnern: Quintet (1905) (ditto)
- Dunhill: Quintet Op. 3
- von Dohnanyi: Sextet Op. 37 (clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello & piano)
- John Ireland: Sextet (1898) (clarinet, horn, string quartet)
Holbrooke and Tovey composed trio's for the same combination as Brahms's famous Horn Trio Op. 40
Reinecke's Op.188 has the same combination as Herzogenberg's Op. 61

Recordings & Broadcasts / Fritz Brandt (1880–1949)
Thursday 27 October 2011, 17:26
WDR3 will broadcast in a "Feiertagskonzert" on November 1st (10.00- 12.00) the string quartet no. 2  in G minor op. 15 by Fritz Brandt (1880–1949). Cobett only says the quartet met favorable opinions among the German critics. I can't find anything on Brandt on internet. But I have a recording of the quartet - presumably the same as the coming broadcast - and I think it's rather nice.
