Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Raff symphonies from Chandos
Wednesday 01 December 2010, 05:31
I guess I might be in the minority here but I am kind of excited that Järvi might be doing a Raff cycle. I own several recordings that Järvi has conducted and I enjoy them all. He may be considered as inconsistent but in what I own I have not found that to be the case. His interpretations are usally vibrant and exciting. I think we should hope for the best until we have been shown otherwise. To have Raff recordings coming forth at all is next to a miracle. If Järvi recording the symphonies will give more exposure to Raff than I am all for it.

Thank you Eric and Josh! You both have been tremendously helpful. Very interesting about the spelling change and the two brothers. I would not have known how to distinguish without your help. I'm very interested in obtaining a copy of the symphony I heard but am also interested in the violin concerto. Thanks again! I can always depend on this site for useful information and discernment.

Composers & Music / Vranicky recommendations
Thursday 11 November 2010, 01:38
This morning on my local classical station (WRR 101.1 FM) they played the piece below and I loved it. It was very Beethoven like and yet not. I was wondering if any of you have experience with composer and what recordings you would recommend?

QuoteVRANICKY: Aphrodite Symphony - 1.
Valek, Vladimir/Dvorak Chamber Orchestra
Supraphon: 72438

If you like Dvorak try Josef Suk! His orchestral music is fantastic!

I may be able to copy the CD someone sent me into my iTunes and then send it to you via WeTransfer.  Would that work for you?

I'd rather have the mp3s again because if you made a wav file CD out of the mp3s it would mean more loss for me to compress them back to mp3 again. Thanks for the offer though!  ;)

Well, as I stated above I have a lot of CDs that I burned several years ago that now won't play. So CDs are not any more reliable than hard drives, in fact I would even say less so. I think the likelihood of losing your external and internal drives within days of each other is pretty low and I do think backing up to an external is much safer and more reliable than CDs.

In any case I guess nobody is willing to host the Bortkiewicz files again so I can hear them again?

Try burning them to CD so you have a backup this time.

Well Jim...I know that would have been the smart thing to do but even burning is no guarantee. I have a whole lot of CD-Rs that I burned with backups which no longer play. I had everything on my PC backed up to an external drive but unfortunately my external was the first thing to show signs of problems and died about three days before my PC did. I am assuming that I was a victim of a recent thunderstorm. In any case a thousand dollars later I'm back in business.

Hi guys!

I was wondering if anyone could repost the Berkowitz concertos? My Sony desktop bit the dust after a long life and I lost all my files. I loved listening to those on a regular basis and miss them very much. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

I still don't get how to do it.  I emailed him, but is that what I'm supposed to do?  Is there a link to PayPal that he's supposed to email me back, or what?

Jim - What I did was send Chris a private message through the board and he responded back within a day or so with what it would cost and gave me his email address to pay through Paypal. I submitted through Paypal and am just waiting for the CDs. However, Chris wrote that they were out of copies of the 3rd symphony and had to order more from Naxos. Thus it would be longer than they anticipated. No worries though. I'm just looking forward to hearing this music!  ;D

How sad!  :(

If the computer geeks are quoting you a price of a $1000.00 to recover the data that means there must be a way to do so. If you could just figure out how to do it yourself then the only expense would be your new drive. I don't know if this link will be of any help to you but you might take a look:

EDIT: I would for sure read through all the comments and the one about putting your hard drive in the freezer for a day might be worth a try. A couple people had luck with recovering data doing that.

Thanks for posting that review febnyc! That reviewer makes those pieces sound fascinating. I may just have to take a chance on Rautavaara.

Composers & Music / Einojuhani Rautavaara?
Friday 28 August 2009, 20:50
I was reading through a copy of Listen magazine and saw an advertisement for the complete symphonies of Rautavaara. I was wondering if any members have experience with his music and is it worth purchasing? On the ONDINE website it seems they are also releasing a box set of his complete concertos this month. I've never heard a single piece for him and I'm hesitant to make a blind purchase without some recommendations.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: A Hollywood Unsung
Wednesday 26 August 2009, 05:46
I run a social network for fans of classic movies called The Golden Age of Hollywood. This sounds like something I would really be interested in reading. It's amazing how many great composers fled Germany and other areas and settled in Hollywood to make a living doing what they loved to do...i.e. compose. Korngold, Steiner, Hermann and others.

That's a very interesting fact about Mickey Rooney. Who would have thought!  :o
