A new disc of chamber works by Hans Gál has been announced by jpc, with release date yesterday December 4th. It contains his 5 intermezzi for string quartet (Op.10, 1914), his string quartet no.4 (Op.99, 1970) and his string quintet (Op.106, 1976). (I've checked as to the appropriateness of posting about this.)
The four string quartets have been recorded before, by the Edinburgh Quartet, on Meridian on discs released in 2005 (nos. 2 and 3) and 2007 (nos. 1 and 4 and the 5 intermezzi, digitally available - at least on Amazon.com - as a somewhat pricey two-disc set). The D major string quintet Op. 106 (published in 1979 and again in 2010) seems to be new to commercial recording, and a description on the Musiques-régenérées website gives this work as a first recording too. (The string quintet can be heard however as part of a concert from the Hans Gál society here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcleyo1i5LU) on Youtube, from about 4 years ago.)
The performers in the new cpo recording are listed @ jpc (https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/cpo/detail/-/art/hans-gal-streichquintett-op-106/hnum/11920206) (click on the back cover image). This new album is available digitally at amazon.com in the US and I imagine elsewhere.
My copy finally arrived yesterday. These are all fine pieces. The Intermezzi from 1914 are in a very Brahmsian style, while the very late quintet from 1976, though expectedly more modern, limits its modernity to something like Reger circa 1910.
I have the Edinburgh Quartet's set of the four string quartets and other works for quartet and can attest that the new CPO recording compares very favorably. Indeed, I hope they continue with the rest of his string music.
