Title: Ole Olsen's opera Stallo
Post by: tpaloj on Friday 26 December 2025, 10:34
The Norwegian composer Ole Olsen wrote four operas, of which only one (Lajla) was performed in the composer's lifetime. Stallo tells a story based on Sámi legends, and is set in Finnmark in the 17th century. This four-act "horror opera" (prologue/act 1/act 2/epilogue) was premiered in Kristiansund in 2002.

The gloomy, fairytale atmosphere and brilliant music in this opening Prologue compelled me to devote my time to typesetting its score. The action concerns two old Sámi gods Adja and Akko, who lament the fading influence of old gods and the spreading of Christianity among the Sámi people. They summon the spirits of the air and Stallo, an evil creature in the likeness of a young and handsome Sámi man. They task Stallo with executing a series of events with the goal of the Sámi people to abandoning their newfound faith in Christ. Warnings given by Adja to Stallo hint at future events to come in the later acts of the opera. The prologue ends as Stallo ascends from Adja and Akko's mountain cave up to the surface to begin his task.

I hope you will enjoy this recreation, despite the fact that I could not bring the Norwegian sung words "to life" with Noteperformer! Now, I'll continue with Act 1 which however is very long, so it'll be a while until I can present a continuation for this project.

I recently just picked up 3 scores from Ole Olsen (all piano concertante works, because that's what I do).  They are the Gallop-Caprice, Spindevise, and Vaeringetog.  I haven't looked closely at them yet, but I get the feeling they're all on the short side, so I might combine them as a single video if and when I get around to doing them.
