An impressive symphony! There's a lot of melodic and rhythmic variety throughout. On first listen, I have to admit the 2nd movement lost me in its meanderings, as did the latter half of the scherzo. But the outer movements have quite a bit of character and drama to them. On the whole, it's a bit too episodic for my liking, but I'll have to listen to it a couple more times to see if that will change.

Thanks. Yes I agree, the outer movements are the most successful. The slow movement is a theme and variations without any clear demarcations which probably causes the 'rambling' effect but on listening again it makes sense I think.

Thanks, once again, Martin, for your splendid work. Having admittedly listened only a couple of times to the piece, I'm rather disappointed by it, having expected great things of Sherwood on the basis of the works we already know. That said, I do agree that the inner movements don't come up to the standard of the outer ones, which are generally impressive in their drive and quality of invention, although episodic as Tuomas mentions. More listening on my part required though, I think.
