Title: Novák piano concerto
Post by: eschiss1 on Sunday 06 November 2011, 17:05
I remember someone, maybe just me, asking if there'd ever been a recording of this piece (last year). There's been at least one (probably non-commercial) one (unsurprisingly, by František Rauch- who's performed and edited so much of the composer's and I think also Suk's and Dvorak's work - with Josef Hrnčíř conducting the Radio Prague Symphony (Symfonický orchestr cs. rozhlasu v Praze) in 1982. (One movement, 27' 48".)

There are two I am aware of:
(1) a live recording with A. Skoumal, piano, and J. Nott, conductor. I don't know the orchestra.
(2) Peter Wallfisch, piano, Jiri Starek, conductor, BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra

I have these movements:
1. Allegro energico (9:40)
2 Andante con sentimento (7:18)
3 Allegro giusto (8:44)

From what I gathered from the YouTube performance, the work is one of those condensed concertos like the 2nd Wieniawski VC, the 2nd Vieuxtemps VC, the 4th, 7th and 8th PCs of Herz, and the 1st CC of Davydov.  The first movement is basically just an exposition section, but instead of leading into a development and reprise it segues into the 2nd movement.
