Title: Sony's Bruno Walter conducts Mahler
Post by: hemmesjo on Thursday 15 March 2012, 04:16
I just got this compilation and have a question that someone on this list will know the answer.

In the new box set it lists symphony 2 being performed by the New York Philharmonic but on the CBS set it lists the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.  All other performers and recording date are the same.

I'm confused.  Thanks.

According to the Bruno Walter discography...

...Mahler 2 was definitely recorded with the NYPO.

There's another weird thing about Walter's later recordings: the Beethoven 9th finale was recorded in NY with the "Columbia Symphony" made up of NY area players. The first three movements were done with the LA-based Columbia Symphony. Doesn't matter, I suppose.
