Hrm. Can add that the violinist in the 1873 performance of the violin concerto was a Mr. Straus; there was another, Crystal Palace, performance early April (3 or 10?) 1875. The Musical Standard reviewer thought very well of the work (and noted in passing that the Larghetto was in A-flat major (flattened 2) - not a rare tonal move in 1873, but still a point of interest. Still not sure if it's ever been published. Noticed a performance of the piano quintet (not an orchestral or choral, though probably a dramatic, work) in 1896 (same series of concerts as I think I mentioned elsewhere today.)
Wow... Quite an amazing list. Yet another 9-symphony composer! :)
I've seen a CD of his Robin Hood opera on the naxos label. The review on amazon did not inspire me to buy though. "The music is pleasant, tuneful and thoroughly forgettable. " Maybe if I see it in a super cheap bin somewhere.
Try his string quartets on IMSLP, anyway. I like them... (Thanks again, matesic :) )
I can thoroughly endorse Robin Hood: anything but forgettable. Since it came out, I have listened to it approximately every two weeks for the last year or so. Lots of lovely melodies! One of the best purchases of the last couple of years!
