Title: World premiere broadcast of Percy Sherwood
Post by: Alan Howe on Saturday 22 September 2012, 19:23
I have just received the following message from cellist Joseph Spooner:

As many of you will know, I recently recorded the complete works for cello and piano by the astonishing but utterly neglected Anglo-German composer Percy Sherwood, with the brilliant and indefatigable David Owen Norris. David will be featured on Radio 3's 'In Tune' next Monday (Monday 24th September), 5.30-6.30, and part of our recent recording will be broadcast. This will be the first ever broadcast of music by Sherwood!

Please tune in if you can, or listen on the iPlayer after the event. The disc is of course available from Toccata Classics here: http://www.toccataclassics.com/cddetail.php?CN=TOCC0145 (http://www.toccataclassics.com/cddetail.php?CN=TOCC0145)

This is good news, the disc is very fine.  The piano concerto recording didn't set me on fire, but these chamber pieces restored my curiosity about Herr/Dr/Mr. Sherwood.

Oh I loved the 2nd Piano Concerto, nothing new at the time but all these years later I thought it had really integrity and elegance.
