Another intriguing release:

I read somewhere this series will actually stretch to 8 discs. I had no idea he was such a prolific orchestral composer (now piano is another story...)
Just curious what holds back Symphony No. 3, not that I really expect it.
There's no rush! If there are 8 CD's then it will turn up in due course!
I now have all four Naxos recent Fibich releases and much of it I enjoy. The last release volume #4 I enjoyed "A Night at Karlstejn Castle Overture" and have included it in one of my playlists. It is an uplifting piece with two themes that are nicely reprised in a exciting finish.
Tom
"A Night at Carlstein Castle" Overture was already in a fine Supraphon Cd (containing inter alia "At Twilight").
Relatively known to me , it has appeared also to me the best piece in Naxos vol.IV.
While I agree with the assessment of the Fibich I'm still glad that I have the additional material though I doubt I'll be listening to it much.
Tom
Having just finally gotten this today, it may be my favorite disc of the four -- it's just chalk full of melodic, colorful music. It's the epitome of what this board is about really.
couldn't agree more. In fact I think I'll get it out and have another listen.
Tom :)
I got this for my birthday today and we listened to it over dinner. It's a lovely disc, full of great memorable tunes. Now I will have to buy volumes 1 - 3 as well. What a shame!!
Sometimes life can be tough ;)
I'm sure you'll enjoy the first three Jonathan.
Tom :)
Speaking about Fibich - don't forget (the 25 years younger) Josef Suk, who married Dvorak's daughter, and who is a much greater composer, of which there are 7 magnificent CDs on the Supraphon label, conducted by Vaclav Neumann and Libor Pesek, all recorded in the 80s and reissued by DENON
Agreed - Suk was a much greater composer. But let's stick to Fibich in this thread, please. No problem with starting a new thread on Suk, of course...
Oops, sorry Alan, I better quit the forum, since also in the Saint-Saens chapter I did a faux pas
No problem. Just start a new thread. I'm sure it'd be very enlightening.
Almost two years later and no volume 5....whatever happened? I remember reading it was supposed to be eight discs. They never even got the third symphony out.
Whoever was sponsoring the recording ran out of money, I imagine. That, or sales of the initial volumes didn't warrant continuing the series.
On the Fibich Society webpage there's no sign of quitting this 8-CD project........... I'm still hoping for continuation.

This question might perhaps be easily answered by an interested party contacting the Fibich Society, don't you think? Or Naxos?
I did.......... got no reply whatsoever. Probalby they only communicate in Czech :-[
Hello folks,
The answer from Naxos relating to Vol. 5 is:
"Dear Sir/Madam,
We hope this finds you well.
According to our department-in-charge, there will be at least one more volume with Fibich=E2=80=99s Symphony No. 3 but it has not been recorded yet. =
If you have any other queries or concerns, please let us know."
Good to see that even big companies are taking care of the worries of simple customers.
In the "Naxos upcoming" page, talks about new volume 5. The last one of the series with Symphony n°3 and some orchestral pieces.
It's wonderful to see this series (so far on a cliffhanger) coming to a close. Yet it makes you wonder what they thought could fit into 8 volumes.
Lots of incidental music
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions_by_Zden%C4%9Bk_Fibich
Yeah, with the exception of a "Midsummers night dream" I'd imagine incidental music isn't a strong seller.
Well, Sibelius is probably as well. And Peer Gynt.
But yeah, it sucks because I love it. It's crazy that even a large Dvorak score is has only ever been recorded once -- in the 40s at that!.
You speaking of his Josef Tyl incidental music right? I'm a big Dvorak fan and I've never heard it myself because of a lack of a recording.
