Title: Transcriptions for Orchestra
Post by: sdtom on Monday 09 November 2015, 17:14
How are these treated as being sung or unsung. I just received a new CD of Schubert and Lizst works that have been adapted to orchestra. In fact one of the Lizst is a world premiere.

I know - I've had the disc for a while and it is excellent!  ;D
I believe I read somewhere there is a 4th orchestration by Liszt of a Schubert march but for some reason, it's not on this disc.  Maybe it dates from outside the remit of the series in that it was composed after the composers time at Weimar?  Either that or I'm wrong or it will turn up on a later disc..?  Either is possible!  :-\

The Symphonic Poem recordings in this series (on the New Classical Adventure Label) are the best I have heard - the period instruments really help the detail to show through (for full details, see the Liszt Society reviews I wrote for them about 2 years ago).  I've not yet heard the volume (on CPO) of the Hungarian Rhapsodies (The Sound of Weimar - 6) but it's on my "to listen to" pile.  I eagerly await volume 8 and any other ones too!

Just ran across a YouTube video of an orchestral treatment of Fanny Mendelssohn's "Das Jahr", enjoyed it.

It might not be your cup of beverage but do you think it falls into the category of the remit and should be moved to the new recording section. Apparently sending a pm through the site didn't work for me. I'm sure it's my computer.
