Title: Wilhelm Goldner (1839-1907): help needed!
Post by: Alan Howe on Tuesday 14 May 2019, 12:05
Friends! Martin Anderson (Toccata) is looking for a good-quality picture/photo of the composer Wilhelm Goldner (1839-1907) for a forthcoming CD, but so far hasn't been able to locate one good enough to use. Can anyone help, please?

Will look. Maybe one of his published scores has a photo on an inner page. Looked for a Brustbild but Worldcat says nothing (maybe OBVSG...)

Thanks, Eric. I've drawn a blank so far.

My first port of call for musicians' portraits is Frankfurt University's Manskopf Collection (https://sammlungen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/manskopf), but Goldner doesn't feature.

Presumably this is the cd for which the picture was sought?  Suites Modernes, to be released Feb 7.

Blurb:   Wilhelm Goldner (1839–1907) was one of the many composer-pianists who populated European musical life in the nineteenth century. Born in Hamburg, six years after Brahms, he trained in Leipzig and made his name and his living in Paris, where his attractive and easy-going music became a favourite of the salons. His first Suite moderne for piano duet, written in 1875, proved so popular that his publisher asked for more, and over the next twelve years Goldner composed five further Suites modernes. Although all six were reprinted in 1904 (by Universal in Vienna, no less), they have long since slipped from sight, and these first recordings restore their charms to modern audiences.

Unsure if the mods would prefer a new thread for this upcoming cd, or just piggyback on this one....

Glad to see some of his music recorded, anyway - I saw some of it in the Library of Congress' American Heritage digital project ("Princesse-valse" Op.25 and "Chanson bulgare" Op.44 for piano, also a ballad "Zum Maienfest Hinaus")...
