Title: Charles Louis Hanssens - Symphonies
Post by: promusician on Wednesday 01 October 2025, 00:57
I would like to ask if anyone has a catalogue of the symphonies he composed, and whether is recorded or not.

From IMSLP:
Symphony no.1 (composed and premiered 1841. 161 p autograph ms score @ Belgian R lib Brussels)
Symphony no.2 in A minor (composed and premiered 1845) (at least 5 symphonies + unnumbered)
Fantaisie [pour orchestre] sur des Airs Populaires (@ Belgian Royal Lib)
Symphony (unnumbered early) in C minor (1827, ms @ BR)

At least 9 symphonies were composed?

There's no mention of any recordings in the late Mike Herman's Benelux Symphonies (A to K) listing at MusicWeb:

Worldcat also lists a symphony for wind instruments (copy of manuscript @ U. Iowa...). Not positive which Hanssens it's by.

The scores/parts of at least one of the others seem to be listed in the KBR.be catalog- for example (at this link) (https://opac.kbr.be/LIBRARY/doc/SYRACUSE/12853349) :

"Simphonie à  grand orchestre

That said, if there are ever to be any recordings, it would be nice to know where the material of the others are, I imagine, and whether these - the wind symphony @ Iowa, the 4th at Artesis, the manuscript copy at KBR - are in performable shape or can be made so.
I would add - apologies for brief off-topic - that his two (? at least) - string quartets were both published by Schott during his lifetime, I believe, and seem to be listed at a number of libraries, with the parts of no.2 (whose score and parts have been more recently reprinted by MPH Münich)  even downloadable digitally from kbr.be ... IMSLP has not yet uploaded no.2 (though we could..) or found a copy of no.1 to upload...
