Title: Robert Fischhof (1856-1918)
Post by: Wheesht on Friday 10 October 2025, 16:04
Robert Fischhof, pianist and composer, was born in Vienna. He came from a musical family, his uncle, Joseph Fischhof, was a personal acquaintance of Schumann, Wagner and Liszt. One of his mother's brothers was Adelina Patti's first husband.
Robert studied at the Vienna conservatoire with Anton Door. As a concert pianist he played with Lassen, Reinecke, Hiller, Grieg, Gade and others. He also performed at the Danish, Swedish and German courts. In 1884 he was appointed to the Vienna conservatoire as a professor and was considered an outstanding pedagogue.
His memoirs (in German) have been digitised (http://digital.ub.uni-leipzig.de/mirador/index.php?ns=viewid&id=0000012396) and are available from the Leipzig university library. They make for interesting reading, especially when he talks about famous people in music whom he met in his youth, but, according to an obituary in Neues Wiener Journal, they are not free from bitterness and contain many an unjust verdict. On page 67 he talks about his compositions and lists a trio, two violin sonatas, a piano concerto, variations for two pianos, many piano pieces, numerous lieder, and finally his 1906 opera "Ingeborg".
The catalogue of Leipzig university library has a number of works by him (https://katalog.ub.uni-leipzig.de/Search/Results?lookfor=Robert%20Fischhof&type=AllFields&limit=20&lng=en), some of which are available electronically. Two short piano pieces are on Youtube, the Poème d'amour Op.47bis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iek_5FVa__o&list=RDIek_5FVa__o&start_radio=1) and a Barcarole, nocturne (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQtom-xD5oc&list=RDrQtom-xD5oc&start_radio=1).

fwiw both violin sonatas (no.1 in A major, Op.47, published 1890 by Doblinger, and no.2 (B-flat minor, publication date unclear but maybe around 1896, Paris: Heugel), and some other works, have been uploaded to IMSLP.
