Recordings & Broadcasts / Ellicott: Piano Trio No.1
Thursday 22 March 2018, 02:45
Last Sunday's concert byTrio Anima Mundi featured the first performance of Rosalind Ellicott's Piano Trio No.1 in G.  It was a bold and lively work quite Brahmsian in parts.
A recording of the work should be available towards the end of the year coupled with trios by Coleridge Taylor, Henry Warner and Cliffe Forrester. I must admit to knowing nothing about the last two composers. Kenji Fujimura, the leader of the trio, paid special tribute to Unsung Composers who were instrumental in his obtaining the full score.Trio Anima Mundi specialise in turn of the century ( 19th/20th) British piano trios and would welcome suggestions by our members as to future repertoire.

I went to the Australian Premiere last week of Coleridge-Taylor's Piano Trio.  I was intrigued as it is not mentioned in Groves or Cobbett.  The trio was written in 1893 yet it remained in manuscript form until 2001.. It is a youthful work , rather short, with hints of Dvorak . The performers , Trio Anima Mundi,  are to record the work for their next CD. This talented and enterprising trio specialize in British piano trios  and are to play Rosalind Ellicot's Piano Trio No.1 next week. A look at their website reveals some hidden treasures in their repertoire.

BTW, on the subject of CT, when is some enterprising company going to record " Tales of Old japan"  ... easily up to the standard of " Hiawatha".

Recordings & Broadcasts / O'Dwyer : Eithne
Thursday 12 October 2017, 11:26
Saturday night on Lyric FM

Opera Night: Robert O'Dwyer's Eithne
Doireann Ní Bhriain presents Robert O'Dwyer's Eithne live from the National Concert Hall, Dublin, a romantic adaptation of a mysterious ancient Irish legend, as the mortal son of Ireland's High King falls in love with the magical Eithne, daughter of the King of Tír na nÓg.

A rare example of an opera with the libretto in the Irish language. Eithne stars internationally acclaimed artists soprano Orla Boylan (pictured) as Eithne, baritone Gavan Ring as the High King of Ireland and tenor Robin Tritschler as Ceart, Eithne's lover. The chorus of Opera Theatre Company and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra are conducted by Fergus Sheil. (Duration unclear)

This was written in 1910. I wonder how it compares with Parry's Blodwyn or Boughton's Immortal Hour....

Composers & Music / Ponce de Leon
Thursday 21 September 2017, 11:04
Not the Fountain of Youth guy but a Colombian composer of the mid 1800s.

Here are some details ... not difficult to understand even for non Spanish speakers

You can download two operas by Ponce de Leon ( Ester & Florinda) together with a nice little waltz for piano on www.reciclassicat.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Kurpinski: Szarlatan
Saturday 09 September 2017, 12:25

Sunday evening on Polish Radio Dwojka, a complete performance of Kurpinski's delightful opera: Charlatan.

I once had an LP of excerpts from this opera so I can recommend it to lovers of early  Romantic opera like Weber or Marschner.

I was in Warsaw about 12 years ago and saw a sparkling performance of another of his operas: Superstition.

To my knowledge this has never been recorded. What a pity... such a treat!

Composers & Music / Charles Horsley
Wednesday 12 July 2017, 09:19
Charles Edward Horsley (1822–1876), English musician, was the son of William Horsley.

He studied in Germany under Hauptmann and Mendelssohn, and on his return to England composed several oratorios and other pieces, none of which had permanent success. In 1860 he was appointed to arrange the music for the 1862 International Exhibition. In the following year he emigrated to Australia, where he worked as a choral and orchestral conductor, and in 1872 went to America. Three weeks after landing in America, he was appointed organist of St John's Chapel, New York at a salary of £500 a year, which position he filled to the day of his death. His wife, Georgina, to carry out his wishes, placed him to rest near and with his own people in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.

His works include a string quartet in C major, the manuscript of which is dated March 1861, shortly after his arrival in Australia; this is probably the first work for this combination to have been written on Australian soil. In the United States he wrote sentimental and patriotic songs, which continued to appear until the last year of his life.

His Violin Concerto is to be given its first Australian performance  in Melbourne in the coming months.
