Composers & Music / Re: William Becker ???
Saturday 04 September 2010, 14:33
That's good to know, Gareth, thanks.  If you send me your address, I'd be happy to mail you a copy of the Moore.  It apears to have been digitized from tape and does sound just a touch wobbly but is certainly listenable.

Composers & Music / Re: William Becker ???
Thursday 02 September 2010, 14:16
I appreciate the warning, thanks.  I'm sure this particular recording is from a radio broadcast.  I've never seen any kind of commercial recording by this ensemble.  Would the Akron SO be delighted if they knew that a number of folks around the world were enjoying their performance?  Probably.  Maybe someone could shed more light on this subject...... I have the Piano Concerto in f, opus 94 of Mary Carr Moore (1873-1957) done by the Maryland Women's SO for example.  Or the Piano Concerto in Ab (1875) of Caryl Florio (The pseudonym of William James Robjohn) by the Asheville SO......as examples.  If anyone has a problem with my posting stuff like this, I can always make CDs for those interested.

Well, ok, here's the downloads for the Concerto:

http://rapidshare.com/files/416531918/Becker_Piano_Concerto_in_e_1.mp3
http://rapidshare.com/files/416531920/Becker_Piano_Concerto_in_e_2.mp3
http://rapidshare.com/files/416531921/Becker_Piano_Concerto_in_e_3.mp3

I guess there is 10 free downloads.  I tried to figure out how to get further into Rapidshare but frankly I guess I'm too old (or too stupid) to figure out what they're talking about.

The pianist is Earl Kelly, Akron SO under Louis Lane.

The Fano Quintet mentioned some time ago is available from Amazon.com in Mp3 format coupled with the Quartet for a bargain $5.99.  I see some idiot wants $43 for the CD....... :D

Composers & Music / Re: Molique Violin Concertos

Molique's Flute Concerto in b, opo 69 and Oboe Concertino in g were both on Lps some years back.  I also have the Cello Concerto in D, op 45 on a cassette, quite possbily the radio broadcast that Peter mentioned above and also on RtoR tape, the Flute Quintet in D, opus 35.

Is there a modern recording of the Violin Concerto?  I have an old reel to reel tape version that needs an update.

Composers & Music / William Becker ???
Tuesday 31 August 2010, 17:21
A friend recently sent me a CD containing a performance by the Akron SO with Earl Kelly, piano of the Piano Concerto in e (1902) of William Becker (1873-1951).  I've looked high and low for some information about this American composer with no success.  Can anyone point me to some information about him?

A different subject:  Is there somewhere that I can upload a performance like this that others could download?  I don't see anything in this URL.

How about the recent recording of Weingartner's Violin Concerto?  I'm not much into 20th century music but this one strikes a chord with me......

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: RPC Vol. 50
Tuesday 24 August 2010, 16:39
I know this is old news now, but as a season subscriber to the Minnesota Orchestra for over 50 years, perhaps you'll forgive me.  I was thrilled when I learned that the MN would be featured on the 50th RPC.  I was totally bummed when I found out what they were recording.  As a guarantor I got a free copy as part of a gift deal - I would not have purchased it.  The performances were live (perhaps the only way that Hyperion could afford the Minnesota) , WERE stunning and audience noise is minimal.  Sound is "Orchestra Hall with 2000 in the audience" and not close miked as some folks like.  Why couldn't they have done something REALLY SPECIAL??  But then, the MInnesota hasn't played anything unsung for at least 25 years.......

Late August 2010 - the links are working fine.   My first try at the VC first movement got me a 130KB download but the second try netted the whole 20megs.  Thanks so much Ilja

I searched Amazon for the Hurum and found one copy available for about USD30 including postage.  The good news is that for US customers, the Mp3 download of the entire cd is only USD8.99.  Heck, make your own CD......and it is lovely although I can always do without string quartets..... :-\

There was, I believe, a Melodiya Lp of this concerto issued some years ago.  I have it in the basement but had back surgery recently so can't get at it at the moment.

'Tis a Shame becuz we'll all be forced to buy the CD for the Wieniawsky......not the sort of thing you expect from Hyperion......but then I was very disappointed when the 50th was our own Minnesota Orch. doing Tchaikovsky.  What a waste.  Even though I got a free copy as a guarantor......geez

Amen to all of the compliments about Jeff.  Have been buying unsungs for many years from RI.  I would encourage you to support him as he is one of the only consistent sources of such stuff in North America.
