Composers & Music / Re: Schmidt-Kowalski anyone?

Thanks for noting the downloads. As expected, the reply I got is that sale is forbidden out of Germany due to copyright reasons. No details were given but well, at least it ain't a marketing or whatever. Such a shame, his music is hands some of the most "listenable" made in recent times.

Those are wonderful news! I guess it is part of Sterling's series, right?

Well, I have already wrote an email to Naxos asking for availability in this side of the pond. Let's see what they reply. Meanwhile, as someone noted before, the only option is listening on spotify although it lacks the cello sonatas/nocturnes.

While I am completely sure that they will broadcoast it again, I am not sure when. I have already written them to enquire. They usually repeat the broadcoasts during the time there is no orchestral season (around may).

Meanwhile you can watch a previous performance at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KQ6esnv2zA . Abdiel has the habit of recording his performances from a camera he places at the edge of the piano. Of course, the piano overpowers the orchestra and in this particular video the orchestra is adequate but not at the (current) level of the OFJ. But it can serve as a preview.

By the way, for the people in the Louisiana area, this concert is going to be performed there this Feb 4th. Maybe someone from this forum can attend ;)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Ricardo Castro PC broadcast
Saturday 24 January 2015, 03:56
This sunday there will be a concert of mostly mexican romantic music, including the Castro piano concerto. The orchestra is top notch (at least for national standards) and the solist is Abdiel Vazquez who is definitely -along with Rodolfo Ritter- the top young pianist around. You can listen at him playing the Ponce concerto with a student orchestra here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLsSXwtjM3Y .

Anyway, the whole concert will be broacasted at: http://c7jalisco.com , be sure to pick the culture (cultura) broadcast. I don't know if it will be available internationally, but I guess it won't have any IP banning by region since it is a public channel. The concert is scheduled for sunday 25th, 12 30 local time. Since we are at GMT -6 that would be 6 30 PM in UK time and 2:30 East Coast time.

The full program is:

José ROLÓN, Zapotlán

Manuel M. PONCE, Chapultepec

Ricardo CASTRO, Concierto para piano (Abdiel Vázquez, piano)

José ROLON, El Festín de los Enanos, Poema Sinfónico op.30 (1925)

José ROLÓN, Tres Danzas Indígenas

Hopefully, some of you might be able to watch it! :)

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Ponce PC2

Thanks for the clarification. I guess that's almost surely the album I was told about: http://www.sterlingcd.com/catalogue/cds1102.html .

A substantial part of the concerto is posted at the end of this page: http://www.fonotecanacional.gob.mx/index.php/noticias/472-rodolfo-ritter-realizara-la-presentacion-mundial-de-grabaciones-y-primicias-de-la-obra-de-manuel-maria-ponce . You are right that its musical  language is not the same as PC 1, this one is way more "impressionist", so to speak. Not late romantic but not in the serialist camp either. Anyway, I got to grant that it ain't really a big romantic piece as its predecessor. And yet, since Ponce (or at least his earlier work) is definitely in the UC "league" I guess this piece might be of interest to some people around.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Ponce PC2

A few months ago I attended a concert by OFJ with Rodolfo Ritter as pianist which was advertised as Ponce's PC but turned out to be a new piece to me: Ponce's Piano Concerto No. 2. Ritter is touring the country debuting the piece, or at least was since late 2013 and through this year.

The reason I'm writing this entry is that I can confirm that a recording has been made, or at least I've been told that by the people of Quindecim recordings at Guadalajara's Book Fair. It was not clear to me if it is going to be released by Quindecim themselves or if Rodolfo has other plans, but a pro-quality recording does exist. If I know more I'll post it here.
