Oh dear. You must have learnt quite a bit of Dutch in the process.  ;)

:) Plus: Willem van Otterloo conducting the Residentie Orchestra (The Hague) in the Kuhnau Variations and the Ricercare, found on cd 9 of the 13cd box by Challenge Classics CC72142 (subtitled: The orginal recordings 1950-1960).

Many thanks! A few additions, based on Eduard Reeser, Een eeuw Nederlandse muziek 1815-1915 + Jolande van der Klis (ed.), The Essential Guide to Dutch Music. 100 Composers and Their Work [BTW what a title  :-\]:

1890 Overture 'Koning Jan' [King John]
1891 Fancy-Fair Waltz
1892 Blijspel-Ouverture [Comedy Overture]
c. 1898 Calme des nuits for mixed choir and orechestra, op. 16
c. 1898 "Zweedsche-Lucifers Marsch" for male choir and orchestra, op.16a
1899     Fantasy on an Old Dutch Song for male choir and orchestra, op.19
?    De vrolijke zangles [The merry singing lesson] for mixed choir and orchestra

His two most played overtures Cyrano de Bergerac [spelling! ;)] and The Taming of the Shrew [we would simply say: De getemde feeks   ;)] are also found on cd 1 in the 13cd box with recordings by conductor Willem van Otterloo on the Challenge label.

Edit: sorry, posted simultaneously with Albion! I think we are rather complementary. :) Yes, of course: there's also this new CPO disc, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie conducted by Antony Hermus, offering new versions of: Op. 5, Romantic Intermezzo Op 13 [5'01], Op. 21, Op. 24, Op. 25 (have it, didn't play it yet. Wagenaar, my fellow Utrechter, hasn't played an important role in my own little life  ;D).

The cantatas Albion mentions are relatively well-known, especially the satirical De Schipbreuk (The Shipwreck) which made his name as a composer.

Erhebung is German for 'elevation', literally, but can mean as much as 'exaltation'. My guess is that it has a Nietzschean connotation here. A translation remains uncertain, as it is probably multi-layered.  :o

BTW: there are a couple of recordings of the Funeral Music from 'Thijl' available, still used at solemn occasions by Bernard Haitink. One is found in the Concertgebouw Orchestra series on Donemus (RCO under Bernard Haitink, 1977).

There's still another recording of the Second Symphony available - my favourite version and first recommendation for this work: Lucas Vis conducting the Hague PO ('Residentie' Orchestra) on a Donemus cd, Composer's Voice CV-KN1.

BTW: 'Matthijs'  ;) - I admire your struggle with al these Dutch spellings.  ;D

The 'Scherzo no. 2 per orchestra' (1957) takes 12'02 on the Donemus recording (Brabant SO under Marc Soustrot). It will be performed in Utrecht in a concert in two weeks. I'll register the timings.  ;)

Plus: Willem van Otterloo conducting the Residentie Orchestra (The Hague) in the Second Symphony (same recording as on the CV cd). This one is found on cd 9 of the 13cd box by Challenge Classics CC72142 (subtitled: The orginal recordings 1950-1960).

Plus, there's also a live recording available of 'De Veertien Stonden' [Fourteen Canonical Hours] (1941-42) for declamation, choir and string orchestra (68 minutes), done by the Katedrale Koor Utrecht with the Nederlands Begeleidingsorkest (Utrecht Cathedral Choir, Netherlands Accompaniment Orchestra) and the voice of Guy Lavreysen. I was present, at the occasion, in the Geertekerk [St. Gertrude Church), Utrecht, 21 March 2009, and saw son Louis Andriessen seated next to the former catholic archbishop, Cardinal Simonis, even sharing a full score. :-) (Unofficial label: KKU2009-01)

Again, I own a UPE Classics cd with another 'work' by Imants Kalniņš, namely Pūt, vējiņi! ('Blow Ye Wind'), a film score from 1973 in 24 parts, with the Liepāja SO conducted by Māris Kupčs. I realize I must have ordered a handful of Latvian cds from a Latvian music store that I had forgotten, but am reminded of by these lists again.  :D

Great lists. But are there no cds with his music? I at least own a 'Highlights of Latvian Classics' cd (UPE Classics label) with his short 'Wedding Song' (1979) for orchestra, taken from the Suite of six Wedding Songs you mention. The Liepaja SO playing, under Imants Resnis.

Another cd has his choral piece 'Latvija' (c. 1958), performed by the Riga Chamber Choir 'Ave Sol' under Imants Kokars (Anthology of Latvian Choral Music III, AVE SOL label LR 9703). I guess Latvian has much more to offer. :-)

BTW, Nietzsche's >Ohne Musik wäre das Leben ein Irrtum< deserves a stronger translation. Think of something more dramatic like:

Without Music - Life, what a cauchemar!

I'm glad to find someone else on earth that likes Vermeulen!  I suppose you have both the Iwaki and the Lucas Vis versions of the 2nd.  The Vis was included in the original LP's of the Donemus "Complete Vermeulen" but dropped for the Ketting version in the CD version... for some reason.

I don't know the reason, but I definitely prefer the Vis.
