Alan, how would you rate his Piano concerto. It didn't make much of an impression on me the first time. Should I revisit the piece?

I'm waiting for the day when we will finally get to hear the orchestrated version of his Violin concerto.

The problem like Alan said is the upper register sound of the piano. Especially in the recording of Concerto No. 3 & 5[this one still hasn't had a decent outing imho]. If only someone like Marc-André Hamelin or Stephen Hough would have recorded this!

This entire cycle by Banowetz could have been the ideal collection had it not been for the instrument used in the recording.

I love this piece! I believe Dutton released this some time back - https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CDLX7329

A very beautiful symphony. Here's a 2024 live performance of Beach's splendid piano concerto played by the pianist Anne-Marie McDermott

I rate Lachner quite high!

I personally don't mind the repeats - The material is so interesting and handled so beautifully.

I'm totally charmed by this music. Seems like we have a very interesting composer yet to be explored; and what a list. 3 Piano Concertos + a Suite, 4 Violin Concertos and Concertante works for Cello [2], Wind ensemble, French Horn and Trautonium. And what of his 5 Symphonies... ?!

Hyperion did put a post earlier on FB asking us what we would like to see recorded in the future. Maybe they are regrouping to have a fresh approach with new artists!?! - Just me being the eternally hopeful.

In a reply today to a mail enquiring about the status of the Romantic Piano Concerto Series from Hyperion, I received the following reply
"...  I'm afraid it isn't possible to give a definitive answer to your question about our RPC series: although there are currently no RPC releases scheduled at the present time, the series hasn't been cancelled and further instalments should not be ruled out in the future. We will, of course, continue to release piano concertos outside the RPC—there is an album of 20th-century Italian piano concertos planned for release early next year..."
What do we make of this? writing on the wall? Beginning of the end? or is there hope for continuation of a once-grand series!?

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Raff Piano Suites for Naxos

Beautiful rendition of Suite No. 3 by Hyelim Kim. These Suites along with Raff's arrangements of Bach are arguably his most important contributions to Piano literature. BTW, did anyone notice that the pianist is barefoot.

I'm a bit confused. Why is this a private release? Isn't it already release by Toccata?

Quote from: Mark Thomas on Tuesday 01 October 2024, 18:58You're probably right, John. I take your point about Liszt's inconsistency. A bit of a left field thought: if we allow the lighter end of the spectrum, Johann Strauss II's large output is of a consistently high quality (he was admired by Brahms).

Imho, (continuing along the lighter end of the spectrum) Josef Strauss also produced works of consistently high quality.  Strauss II, himself said Josef is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular

Do we have a detailed list of his compositions - Any other symphonies or concertos?
