The CD is out now and on the back it reads London Chamber Ensemble Quartet. So, we get the original string quartet version. I just listened to the Harrogate quartet and enjoyed it.

Well, I live in Germany too. So if I can be of any help, let me know.
Best regards
Wieland

The first two string quartets from Joachim Raff played by the Leipzig String Quartet. A new complete cycle?

This is an easy one

My Discovery of the Year are definitely the 10 Symphonies of Fritz Brun conducted by Adriano. Before I only new Symphony 1. Since the Brilliant Box was published I have listened to each Symphony at least 3 times and found each rewarding. For me a major  addition to the symphony canon of the 20th century and therefore indispensible.

cpo has announced to record all 8 string quartets by Karl Weigl, the first CD will contain the last two from the US exile. Nos 1, 3 and 5 were already recorded two decades ago by the Vienna-based Artis Quartet.

Already out is Capriccio's second installment of the symphonies, including a (I believe) first recording of No. 4 joined by No.6.

On first hearing I found No. 4 immediately attractive especially the final Adagio.

Marx' Herbstsymphonie will be released next week:

Well, I tried to get some information on the quality of the quartets but that is not easy. There was one previous recording of 3 quartets by the Danel Quartet, but I could not find any review. A concert review of the 3rd quartet relates it to Beethoven and Brahms. There is an amateur/student video on youtube of one quartet, but that's it. So there is some risk involved when you order it, but I love to take risks , at least when it comes to music.

A recording of all six string quartets of French composer Charles Gounod by the Quatuor Cambini-Paris is announced:

If you have a look at the Minguet Quartet website you will find that obviously there is also a recording session for the cpo label taking place with the Reznicek quartet(s). So I think in the end we all will be able to listen to this piece.

I am not sure whether this composer is considered being within the remit of this forum, but maybe his early works are. The 2nd symphony was composed in 1930/31 - four years after the impressive first - and although the forces are "smaller" we still talk about a Mahlerian Orchestra plus 3 timpanists, two pianos, an organ and - for the 5 min 3rd movement - 16 (!!!) Waldhörner. Very practical for a period when European economies were still struggling hard with the results of the financial crisis of 1929. The music is a strange mixture of Mahler, Scriabin, Schönbergs Gurrelieder and the symphony Franz Schreker never wrote plus some typical Brianesque oddities. Like most other symphonies of this composer it is perhaps not fully successful but impressive enough to merit attention. Especially with this new recording from Dutton with Martyn Brabbins conducting the RSNO which is marvelous.

I received today my copy of Fifield's book and after having read 1 1/2 chapters I know that this is the book I was looking for for a long time. So thanks for bringing this book to my attention. I have just dug out my copy of Dahlhaus Music history of the 19th century which I never fully read and now I know why. There are way too many names missing in that book. And yes, it will require a lot of listening time to follow (as far as possible) all what Fifield wrote. In preparation of my vacation, I am currently loading many symphonies onto my ipod to take along with the book.

I try to solve this misunderstanding via UC PM.

You may, I did not realize this forum has this function, nice
