Dear members,

I missed the BBC broadcast of Alice Mary Smith's Overture Endymion No. 2 last week.
Not living in the UK I have no access to the stream. Can anyone help me?

I've just downloaded the audio file, will PM you as I don't have time to write a proper post in the download section now...

Thank you very much, Mark!
Several of her works have been recorded and broadcast by BBC forces in the past and I had assumed this overture had been, too. That's why I missed to record it.

I think they're working their way towards releasing a Chandos CD, but it seems to be taking some time....

Alas I was unable to expand the zip file. (Error 1 - Operation nor permitted.)

I'll investigate. Anyone else have the same problem?

On a Win11 system:
1) Extracted fine using 7-zip 16.04
2) Windows Explorer can open the .zip and find a playable mp3
3) WinRAR 3.30 fails with errors:
Smith, Alice Mary Endymion No.2 Overture.zip: Unknown method in Smith, Alice Mary; Endymion No.2 Overture.mp3
Smith, Alice Mary Endymion No.2 Overture.zip: No files to extract

Thanks. It opened fine for me too, but I've re-uploaded it anyway.

Anyone share my view that it's a very fine work?

Ilja

It's very Schumannesque, and the central theme is fairly strong. My only problem with it is that the bits before and after the big pause at 2:40 sound like they're from two entirely different pieces of music. I really had to check that I hadn't inadvertently skipped to a different piece. Personally, I think her slightly later Lalla Rooke overture holds together a bit better. Having said that, I think neither of these can hold a candle to her far more sophisticated Jason, the Argonauts and the Sirens overture from 1876.

Ooh, I obviously need to do some further listening, Ilja. :)
