Although this is ostensibly a review of Gardiner's latest Brahms cycle on DG, Hurwitz talks in some detail about the matter of vibrato employed by the string departments of the Vienna Philharmonic and Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestras in the 19th century.
Well worth a listen:

Apparently, some of Hurwitz's videos have been accidentally erased; should be up again soon, though.

I have read, so far, up to page 50 of his treatise. When he is not functioning as a YouTube populariser, there is more to him than I thought.

I think he's quite effective at being both, whether you agree with him (and his style of presentation) or not. His channel has been a real boost for the recognition of the unsung, and a few of his books (particularly his "owner's manual" to Sibelius) are excellent.
