The new Da Capo recording of August Enna's (2nd, but only existing) symphony and violin concerto are reviewed and released in the latest Records International (with the odd claim that each work is a premiere recording. The 2nd symphony was on cpo and the violin concerto was on Danacord, as I recall.)

This new recording conducted by Willens contains the piano concerto, two concert overtures, and the Faust-Overture by Emilie Mayer (release date apparently 21 July).

Composers & Music / André Watts (1946-2023)
Saturday 15 July 2023, 02:11
Though his repertoire I think mostly intersected ours in a few unusual Liszt works and his advocacy of Edward MacDowell's 2nd piano concerto, still, it's sad to have to note the death of André Watts two days ago in any forum...

Is this new or a repackaging? Anyhow, expected out August 18th on Music & Arts per Presto.

Composers & Music / Jenő Jandó (1952-2023)
Wednesday 05 July 2023, 02:53
Died today. Best known for his recordings of standard repertoire (including some complete piano works sets with some less-known music, of course) and some slightly-to-much-less-known Hungarian composers (Bartók and Kodály of course but also Lajtha ("Chamber music with flute. Vol. 1"), Farkas, ...) (but also recorded Rossini's Soirées, Kuhlau sonatas and sonatinas, and played piano in a recording of trios by Felix Mendelssohn and Louise Farrenc, for example, and a few years ago Mingxin Du's piano concerto as well...

See Presto Classics. (His three violin sonatas date from 1905, 1906 and 1907; these are the latter two.) Release is expected in about two months.

Composers & Music / Rachel Yakar (1936-2023)
Sunday 25 June 2023, 02:02
Rachel Yakar, a soprano with a very wide repertoire who died today, may be known to us here mostly for her recording of Giuseppe Martucci's Canzoni, but in any event I believe she may have made premiere or early recordings of a whole lot of works (if not generally in our forum's orbit otherwise.)

According to Presto Music, Naxos will be adding to their growing list of recordings of Alfano chamber works a new one, of his three string quartets, expected in late August- the first in D major (1918, but heard in its revision of 1924), the 1927 quartet no.2 "in tre tempi collegati" (in C) published by Universal Edition (as quartet no.3) in 1928, and the G minor quartet no.3 (...also published as Terzo quartetto, by the publisher Suvini zerboni in 1949).

Naxos claims these as premiere recordings, which seems likely.

(According to SBN he (or someone...) arranged the intermezzi from his first two string quartets for string quintet and published them as-it-says-on-the-can "Due intermezzi (dal 1. e dal 2. quartetto) : per due violini, viola, violoncello e contrabasso" in 1938... :) )

The pianist, who it's said made the first commercially available complete recording of Josef Suk's piano music, died recently (announced on the 9th.)

Here's another nice recording from SWR2, of Helena Munktell's 'Kleines Klaviertrio' (1897?) (opens in A-flat, finale in F. Unpublished.)
Description in German and recording.
Description from Swedish Musical Heritage.

For those interested, the WDR weekly music podcast recently carried this recording from July 2022 of Emilie Mayer's 2nd symphony with Holly Hyun Choe conducting the Ensemble Reflektor.

Rubinstein quartets vol.2 will be issued by cpo on Tuesday 24 April, and consists of string quartets op. 17 nos.2&3 (no.3 in F major - the others in the set are in G major and C minor - may be, I think, a first recording. Op.17 No.1 was recorded once, op.17 no.2 has been recorded one and a quarter (the slow movement separately, on acoustic, a century ago) times at least?...)

Wanted to add that some of the music on that CD is now available in full score and/or reduction @ issuu.com/scoresondemand, uploaded in the last month. I realize that only some of the response was positive, but I think no harm in adding this information.

Saturday 25 March 2023, 18:18
It's almost 3 weeks ago but I notice that Kenneth Montgomery, a conductor of recordings (commercial and otherwise) that have been mentioned here , died on the 5th of this month.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Kaminski/Gould
Saturday 25 February 2023, 16:06
A cpo CD expected in a few days has the fine Minguet Quartet in the 1912 (ca.) string quartet in F of Heinrich Kaminski (I know of one other recording) and in Glenn Gould's string quartet as well. (Apparently the whole CD was recorded in 2016-17, so hopefully the production values are high enough to explain the 6-year gap :) )

String trio works by Weiner (string trio no.1 op.6 in G minor, 1908), Strauss (Variations on the Bavarian Song ''s Deandl is harb auf mi' (1882)), and Egon Wellesz (String Trio op.86 (1962)) will be live broadcast @ 19:30 local time (GMT, I think) from Oxford - see String Trios from Holywell Music Room, Monday evening (afternoon my time).

Naxos 8574495, expected 24 March 2023, to contain two string trios (Op.33 serenade of 1906 and trio in A major of 1889), Romanza for horn and string quartet, and other works, is described @ Presto Classical and also @ Naxos.

Sonatas by Emilie Marie von Bach, Henriette Bösmans and Rita Strohl (C minor sonata composed in 1924, A minor sonata published in 1919 and Sonate dramatique "Titus et Bérénice" published in 1892). All these works performed, in fact I think recorded, before, but still and intriguing combination, and expected from Raitinen and Forsberg on the Arcantus label 31 March.

This release of Stanchinsky piano works will contain piano sonatas and other works, and is announced for 14 April.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Stanford's Requiem: new recording
Saturday 25 February 2023, 14:48
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Hyperion is issuing a new recording of Charles Stanford's Requiem expected 5 May, conducted by Martyn Brabbins.
