Recordings & Broadcasts / Atterberg Symphonies
Saturday 05 May 2012, 12:30
The host of Swedish Radio P2 'Klassisk förmiddag' announced a couple of days ago that Neeme Järvi is going to record a new complete set of Kurt Atterberg's symphonies with the Gotenburg Symphony Orchestra. Have any of you further information? I would be interested to known which company will undertake this task!

Monday, approx 3.05pm, BBC Radio 3

Seems to be the complete score! Hopefully some British UC member will record it in high quality?

Composers & Music / Alexander Moyzes (1906-84)
Saturday 25 February 2012, 21:24
I see we have no thread dedicated to this great Slovak composer, so here it is!  :D

The main reason for posting is a question for the source of a recording of his piano concerto:
According to the Music Centre Slovakia http://www.hc.sk/src/skladatel_print.php?oid=985&lg=en several version of this work exist.
I recorded a 14-minute piece in two movements from the BBC some years ago. The announcer called it simply 'a piano concerto'.
The pianist was Ida Cernecka, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra accompanied. I cannot understand the name of the conductor (Marian Vach, perhaps?)
Can you help me? Has this recording been released commercially? If not has anyone a better copy than mine for upload?

Composers & Music / Arvo Pärt - Double Concerto?
Thursday 19 January 2012, 22:10
Sorry, Pärt is of course one of the most sung composers of our time but I have this early 90s recording of a concerto for violin, cello and strings. The performers are Saschko Gawriloff, Ulrich Heinen and the RSO Saarbrücken, conducted by the Spanish avant-garde composer Christobal Halffter. This is however not an early modernist work by Pärt but one of his early pieces in tintinnabuli style. I couldn't trace it in Pärt's official worklist. Perhaps he has withdrawn it? I am not even sure about the title: my inscription on the cassette says 'Doppelkonzert'  - I suppose I took this title from a radio journal. The announcer at the end didn't give any details but said something like: You have listened to Concerti Grossi by Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt.

The movements are:
1. Adagio - attaca
2. Allegro - attaca
3. Largo

Now, what is this piece? When did Pärt write it?
I may upload it - despite Pärt's status as a sung composer - if you like.

Composers & Music / Robin Milford (1903-1959)
Wednesday 07 December 2011, 15:25
I think Robin deserves his own thread. He wasn't the man to write big stuff but he excelled very much in songs and finely crafted miniatures.
However, there are plans to record a few of his larger orchestral works. As Peter Hunter of the Milford Trust kindly told me, these are:

Concertino for Harpsichord and Strings op. 20 (1929)

Pastoral Fantasy, Op. 23, for small orchestra with violin solo (1930)

Symphony op. 34 (1933)

Concerto Grosso op. 46 (1936)

Violin Concerto op. 47 (1937)

'Ariel' Prelude op. 54 (1940)

More details are not known at the moment but the Symphony will be performed at next year's English Music Festival.

Diana McVeagh gives in her biography of Gerald Finzi a list of all the performances of the NSP from 1940 to 1956.
The world premiere performances interest me very much. These are certainly not adventurous works but I would love to hear them, anyway:

1945: Robin Milford - Te Deum
1946: Anthony Scott - Prelude and Fugue
1947: Robin Milford - Elegiac Meditation for viola and strings (this has been recorded by hyperion; twice, I think!)
1948: H. Parry (arr. Finzi) - When I survey (Finzi wrote many works for string orchestra, so I wonder why this arrangement has never been included in any CD recording of his works! Has it?)
1949: Kenneth Leighton - Symphony for strings op. 3 (recorded by Chandos)
1950: Kenneth Leighton - Veris gratia op. 9 (recorded by Chandos; currently only available as download?! Is perhaps a new recording planned? Such a fine piece!!!)
1951: Robin Milford - The Forsaken Merman
1954: Robin Milford - Concertino for keybord and strings (most likely this is the Concertino in E op. 106, recorded by hyperion)
Roy Teed - Such were the Joys
1955: Richard Arnell - Canzona and Capriccio op. 37 for solo violin and strings
Francis Baines - Fantasia for strings
Robin Milford - Fishing by Moonlight op. 96 (twice recorded by hyperion)
          Elizabeth Maconchy - Oboe Suite

Milford and Arnell have seen an ongoing revival though the former's 'Forsaken Merman' and the latters 'Canzona and Capriccio' still await recordings.

Maconchy, though hardly a household name, is respected, loved and performed regularly. However, I  couldn't find out anything about this 'Oboe Suite'. Has it probably been withdrawn?

Most tantalising are the 'forgotten ones':

Anthony Scott (1911-2000), who was Finzi's pupil, wrote a touching memoir about his teacher.
It's interesting to read what Finzi had to say about his music. He preferred his music to that of Kenneth Leighton. Contrasting the Scott's Sinfonietta ('thwarted inarticulate talent at forty-two') with Leighton's youthful Veris gratia ('mellifluous and beautiful', 'flowering genius') he said (about Scott): 'Talent allied to character is often more powerful and effective than natural genius' – a comment very typical of Finzi.
Vaughan Williams's comment about this piece (Sinfonietta, performed 1952 by the Boyd Neel orchestra) is also very characteristic: 'like the Grosse Fuge with knobs on.'
Here is a list of some published works:
http://soundandmusic.org/thecollection/resources/thecollection/browse/composer/12636

David Coram, has recorded two organ pieces. He seems to be engaged in reviving his works.
http://www.davidcoram.co.uk/scott.html

Music and Vision has a short 'musing' by basil Ramsey
http://www.mvdaily.com/articles/1999/02/musing03.htm

McVeagh has nothing to say about Roy Teed (b. 1928) or Francis Baines (1917-99?).

I suppose Baines is the subject of this obituary:
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/obituaries-francis-baines-1087679.html

Gordon Pullin has recorded a CD with songs of Roy Teed, which I haven't heard yet:
http://www.englishtenor.co.uk/teed.htm

And here is a short curriculum:
http://www.debretts.com/people/biographies/browse/t/13812/Roy%20Norman+TEED.aspx

Has anybody of you some personal recollections or further information about Scott, Baines or Teed?

Composers & Music / Ronald Settle
Saturday 15 October 2011, 12:09
Some time ago Keith Bramich wrote to the British Music List:

'Does anyone have any biographical information about composer Ronald
Settle? So far I have what's below.

In particular I'm interested to know the dates and places of his birth
and death, and also to verify whether or not the Australian composer of
'Shadows' and the MD at the Liverpool Playhouse were the same person.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give ... I'll update the page
below with any changes.'

He then gives the following link:

http://www.mvdaily.com/articles/s/r/ronald-settle.htm

Can you help him?
I will pass any additional information on to Keith.

Composers & Music / Looking for an out-of-print song
Thursday 13 October 2011, 15:06
I am looking for the following song:

Mervyn Roberts: Christmas Day (Words: Andrew Young), published in 1947 by Novello & Co.

Chesternovello told me that they no longer have any copies and advised me to contact the British Library. I did so and indeed they have it.
Unfortunately the price for a copy is sensationally high. Just cannot afford it.

How or where do you get out-of-print scores? All suggestions are welcome! :)

Composers & Music / The Avant Garde Project
Wednesday 31 August 2011, 23:35
Though Unsung Composers is mainly dealing with romantic to early 20th century composers some of you may be interested in this project:
http://avantgardeproject.conus.info/mirror/archive.htm
The site offers free downloads of digitalised LPs. Take a look, at least some composers may find your interest.
There are for example some works by Othmar Schoeck whom few would term an avantgardist.
(Oh, I've just noticed that this is Schoeck's 125th birthday, September 1st. Happy Birthday! :D)

Composers & Music / Emile Ristori
Saturday 06 August 2011, 16:10
He seems to be the typical one-piece-composer. If you have heard of him at all then you have heard the Horn Concerto in A Minor in a recording by Zbigniew Zuk.
http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=492206
This is the only 'substantial' source of information I found by googling.
Does any of you know more about him, perhaps even heard other works?
It's tantalising to read that he composed 'a wide range of works including songs, cantatas, organ pieces, and a violin concerto.'

I must confess, there a some of whom I have never heard before...

Suggestions & Problems / Folder-Downloads
Saturday 02 July 2011, 22:32
Sorry for posting: this isn't a problem with Unsung Composers. I know that other users had similar problems. Perhaps someone can help?
I have tried to download several files from the download section at once (bulk-download). It worked e. g. with the British music folders but not with the Argentinian or the Sulek. I was asked to upgrade to MediaPro. Can you explain why this happens only with some, not with all folders? Unfortunately I was informed that the same annoying thing happens with the music in my own "The Tchaikovsky Experience".
