"Marouf" is well worth getting to know. The recording to get is definitely the one conducted by Jesus Etcheverry although the dance sequence, one of the score's highlights, is shortened.

Yes, I was saddened to hear that
too. He was a creative pianist whose interpretations were full of imaginative though unobtrusive ideas.

Well said, Alan.

That's not the DVD recording, conducted by Lionel Friend, which prompted this thread  It's a new CD only recording which I haven't heard and, if that review is to be believed, it is decidedly inferior to the DVD version. That's very good although, of course, a fully staged version would have been preferable. Four ratings on Amazon...all five star.

There are several uploads of "Phryné" on Youtube but I think they are all of the same performance....one dating from 1960 conducted by Jules Gressier. A good cast ( including Denise Duval, no less) should help to guarantee an authentic feel.

One of my particular interests is French opera. Has anyone heard this recording?  Is it worth £28 or so for a one act work on a single disc?

The whole CD can be heard on Francesco Parrino's Youtube channel:

The CPO disc of Rontgen's violin concertos with Liza Ferschtmann as soloist features the F# minor concerto.

Composers & Music / Re: Massenet: Large Scale Choral Works.

I reviewed the CD recording of "La Terre Promise" earlier this year for Amazon.co.uk ( I'm "someonewhocares2" )  and referred to your useful MusicWeb review. Surprisingly, since the artwork on the front cover is identical, the CD and DVD performances are not the same, the CD performance dating from some 12 years earlier. Since you were critical of the tenor Patrick Garayt on the DVD version, I recommended the CD recording which seemed to me excellent although, as in the DVD performance, the forces employed are smaller than Massenet requested. In fact, Garyat is also the tenor on the CD version but, in 2000, he was 12 years younger!

Yes. It's one of the finest of all unsung Romantic piano concertos. Some while ago I read that, as well as Oleg Marshev, another well know pianist had taken it up but I can't remember who it was!

Yes. The third is the best of the symphonies but, as you say, Alan, the Danacord performances of all four and the recording quality are poor to the extent that I wouldn't recommend those discs. Perhaps Naxos or CPO will take up the reins.

Thanks for those links. Interesting that they chose the very Wagnerian 1st Symphony  ( which Stenhammar withdrew ) rather than the much better known second. In spite of the obvious influence, it is a very fine piece which deserves to be heard.

Here's a recording by Charles Dutoit and the Orchestra National de France of the "Chasse Fantastique" from this opera. It's a thrilling 15 minutes' worth of music:

Yes. That will be it judging from the movement descriptions which match those of the Youtube performance here. The 20-25 minute timing is wrong, though. The first movement alone lasts that long. Here's a recent thread on this work.
