Anyway....at this point, we are all frequently (and quite correctly) admonished to "get back to the music, please".  So, let's do so. As I asked previously, has anyone listened to the Blodek "Shakespeare" suite, which is the included music with the recorded symphony? Might acquire it as well, but always like to hear reviews, pro and con, from the UC community. Thanx, everyone.

"Volume 1" of the (apparently) complete recordings of the Popper Cello/Piano pieces.

Presto:   "For almost 20 years, Martin Rummel has been praised worldwide for his recordings of the works of cellist David Popper (1843 to 1913). After the Etudes, Suites and Cello Concertos, he now presents, together with pianist Mari Kato, the first part of his planned complete recording of the works for cello and piano.

On this album, in addition to a few already popular works such as the Hungarian Rhapsody, Op.68, there is evidence of Popper's own extensive concert activity in the form of music influenced by Spanish, Scottish, Venetian, Little Russian and Oriental folk music in addition to Hungarian.

Even the lesser-known works on this album, for example the charming Scottish Fantasy, Op. 71, deserve the same place in the standard repertoire as Popper's hits that are still popular today - Martin Rummel and Mari Kato provide convincing arguments for this to happen..

TYXart (a label new to me) will release an album of multi-movement pieces for cello & piano by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze.  The back of the album cover includes the phrase "World Premiere Recording", but unclear as to whether this refers to one of the 4 pieces, or more than one, or all.

3 Morceaux, Op. 48
Rythmes Délaissés
Suite for Cello & Piano, Op. 9
3 Esquisses for Cello & Piano

Presto blurb:  "Of the most prolific and world-famous composers from Switzerland, none fell into oblivion faster after his death than Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. With the late Romantic Joseph Joachim Raff, born in Lachen (Canton Schwyz), he shares the multitude of compositions in various genres, with his friend Arthur Honegger the multitude of publishers in France, England and Switzerland.  Born as a contemporary of Jean Sibelius five years after Mahler and Hugo Wolf and ten years before Ravel, who influenced him less than the German Romantics, Jaques-Dalcroze developed a distinct personal style at the turn of the 20th century."

cpo continues its Louis Glass Symphony series - Symphony #4 is next up.  Oddly enough, I saw this listing at Amazon USA but at none of the other usual suspects - unless I missed it, don't see it yet at Presto, Amazon UK, or Apple Music.  Features Daniel Raiskin & Rhine State Philharmonic Orchestra - that team elicited raves around here with the Symphony #5 a while back.

(Would like to have posted album cover here, but I haven't been able to make the "insert image" button work for quite a while now.  Anyone who has solved this problem....DM welcome!  Will try to insert link to album cover image here, maybe it will work & maybe it won't!)

Release date on Amazon USA is June 17.   (and shortly thereafter I shall be able to cut loose the corresponding Plovdiv Philharmonic recording....from a series which has not exactly been showered with praise  :o

Quote"For the third time Kolja Lessing, one of the most versatile musicians of our times, dedicates himself to the multifaceted composer Carl Czerny and specifically to his Systematische Anleitung zum Fantasieren auf dem Pianoforte op. 200 (Systematic Introduction to Improvisation on the Pianoforte). "If a finely written musical work can be compared to a noble architectural edifice in which symmetry must predominate, then a successful fantasy is a beautiful English garden, seemingly without rules but brimming with surprising variety and intelligibly, meaningfully, and planfully executed." It was with this poetic comparison that Czerny, writing in the introduction to his Anleitung zum Fantasieren, characterized the nature of improvisation, contrasting it with a composition elaborated in writing. It is scarcely surprising that Czerny, quite early marked by many years of the closest contact with his mentor Beethoven and his unique art of improvisation, presented this compendium in 1829 in his effort to grasp music encyclopedically. As an instructive work, it systematizes all the different kinds of improvisation then in use and illustrates them with numerous models, often ones honed with the finest artistry. In his compendium Czerny addressed the knowledgeable, technically uncommonly well-versed player. In his accompanying texts he refers to models that at the time were almost completely unknown such as Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Art of Fugue, to exemplary works by his contemporaries Beethoven, Clementi, Hummel, and Moscheles, and even to his own publications in respect of each improvisational genre. It is thus that Czerny's op. 200 offers fascinating insights into the musical practice of the early nineteenth century at the crossroads between Classicism and Romanticism – while he himself already belongs to the Romantic period by virtue of his encyclopedic thought bringing together all the epochs of music history."

Presto: Now the famous and successful Genova & Dimitrov Piano Duo turns to the American composer Amy Beach. Her compositional oeuvre marks a high point within the great phase of consolidation experienced by art music in the United States between the Civil War and World War I. Amy Beach was not the first American woman who composed or the first America [sic] woman who earned money with her compositions; but she created a stir in the music world by forging ahead into genres in which previously only men had distinguished themselves. However, it was above all the piano that was Amy Beach's lifelong companion. She honored her instrument with solo compositions in a total of twenty-six opus numbers distributed equally over her entire compositional career from the 1880s to the 1930s. Even though her music for piano four hands or for two pianos is limited to a few compositions, they just as positively attest to their author's talent as do her works for two hands. The original version of Amy Beach's Variations on Balkan Themes op. 60 is her most extensive composition for piano two hands and the one that is the most challenging in playing technique. At the same time, the variations represent one of her most significant endorsements of folk music.

The first two quartets, played by the Cuarteto Latinamericano, were discussed on this forum, but many years ago.  (the discussion centered largely on whether our ol' friend Mr. Hurwitz was guilty of hyperbole - yes, that again  ::)).  In any case the third and fourth quartets are nearly here, from the same ensemble, on the same label, Sono Luminus.  Presto shows cd available 11 Feb, Amazon (at first glance) appears to show download only.

Presto:  "Ruperto Chapí's String Quartet No. 3 could well be subtitled Tragic Quartet. Here's a work of a stormy nature, containing atmospheres of drama, anguish and loneliness. Out of the four quartets written by the composer, this is perhaps the one which has the least Spanish features."

Naxos will release a "World Premiere Recording" of Sullivan's one-act ballet "Victoria & Merrie England".  According to the back cover, it was composed in 1897, for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.  RTÉ Sinfonietta, Andrew Penny.   3 Dec at Amazon USA & UK, & Presto.

(actually, just as I write this, I see this is another Naxos re-release of a previous Marco Polo recording, from 1995.  Perhaps takes the "World Premiere Recording" bloom off the rose a little   ::))

Solo piano music (incl "World Premiere Recording") of Alfons Szczerbiński, from Grand Piano, entitled "vol. 1" of a "Complete" collection to come, evidently.

A short Youtube promotional video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW3gquVN91A

"Polish composer Alfons Szczerbiński was born at a time of upheaval in Europe during the second half of the 19th century. A prominent Polish talent in the Romantic mold, Szczerbiński was profoundly influenced by the harmonic models of Bach, Haydn and Mozart. His surviving music is mostly written for the piano but many of his compositions were either lost during the First World War or destroyed by the composer himself. Heard here in their world première recordings, the Chansons sans paroles are Romantic miniatures that possess rich melodic elegance and marvelous phrasal beauty, sometimes redolent of Mendelssohn, Chopin or Liszt."

This album may (or may not) be mostly a curiosity - the notes below don't really give a clue about the appropriateness for discussion here; I just notice that for as much (or as little) as it's worth, most of these pieces are dated between 1900 and 1910.  Release 22 Oct.

"Arthur Farwell has been called 'the most neglected composer in [American musical] history.' Hounded by accusations of 'cultural appropriation,' he has posthumously fallen prey to changing notions of cultural authenticity. As the leader of the 'Indianists' movement, Farwell believed it was a democratic obligation of Americans of European descent to try to understand the indigenous Americans they displaced and oppressed. To this end, he merged Indian music and lore with Western concert forms – today, a controversial practice. The performances here recorded originated at a landmark PostClassical Ensemble festival at Washington's National Cathedral."

The Prospero label will release an album of early Fritz Brun chamber pieces: the E flat String Quartet from 1898 and the 1st Violin Sonata in D minor, from 1906.  Artists: Manuel Quartett, Stefan Meier & Alexander Ruef.

Amazon UK & USA show 5 Nov release, as download only, at least at this point in time.  No listing yet at Presto.   I tried to find a blurb on Prospero's own website, to copy/paste here, but nothing to be found.

Divine Art will release an album of heretofore unrecorded works by Eugène Ysaÿe, including a "previously unknown" Violin Concerto from 1910.

Scènes Sentimentales
Élégie
3 Études-Poèmes
Petite Fantaisie Romantique
Violin Concerto in G minor

Divine Art's blurb contains a hint of a red flag for this forum, although I'm not sure I remember hearing any Ysaÿe that I thought likely to frighten the horses (based on somewhat limited listening, though):

"Belgian violinist, conductor and composer Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931) has been recognized as one of the greatest violin virtuosos of the 19th and early 20th centuries; regarded as the "King of the Violin" by Nathan Milstein, his legacy has inspired generations of musicians. Ysaÿe was also a true avant-garde composer whose works feature revolutionary modern violin technique, unique expressive devices, profound musicality and harmonic originality, which eventually served as the bridge between the era of the Romantic virtuoso and contemporary music. It is odd, then, to realise that many of his works remain unknown, unpublished and unrecorded. This album presents for the first time several works for violin and piano ranging from 1885 to 1924, and a previously unknown Violin Concerto in G minor from 1910, which was orchestrated by Sabin Pautza."

Grand Piano will release an album of solo piano works by Florent Schmitt, with Biljana Urban at the piano.  Grand Piano states that there are several "world premiere recordings" among the works presented:

Prélude triste, Op. 3, No. 1 (1895)
Ballade de la neige, Op. 6 (1895)
Neuf pièces, Op. 27 (1903)
Pupazzi, Op. 36 (1907)
Ritournelle, Op. 2 bis (1925)

There is also an interesting article on florentschmitt.com, discussing the works with the artist.

Flute & guitar works by Anton Diabelli (he of "Variations" fame) will arrive on an MDG recording.  These works appear to be right at the early edge of the suggested dates for this forum, but might be of added interest just for the less-than-common pairing of instruments.   17 Sept at Presto, 28 Sept at Amazon UK, Oct 1 at Amazon USA.

"Anton Diabelli became immortal through Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations", but the busy composer, arranger, publisher and music manager could also do it the other way round. His "Pot-Pourri from Beethoven's most popular works" may seem sacrilegious to some admirers of the titan today. When it was written in 1817, it met a huge demand.  Helen Dabringhaus and Negin Habibi present this extraordinary treat together with other works by Diabelli for flute and guitar."
