Definitely not the expected "unsung masterpiece", if one can judge by the Overture...

Composers & Music / Re: Alexander Ritter (1833-1896)
Wednesday 30 March 2022, 18:37
I'm in the process of reading the very interesting collection of biographical notes and writings by Strauss (collected and translated by Christophe Looten), and on several occasions, he mentions works that he deemed worth performing.  Among which Hans von Bulow symphonic poem Nirvana (which is findable on YT), and the lieders and 2 one-act operas of Alexander Ritter : Der faule Hans, and Wem die Krone.
"Since the beginning I owe Ritter's teaching and his Lieder the understanding of what one can learn from Wagner without imitating him".
That sounds like a convincing and sincere homage.
So hopefully, like Strauss had wished : "maybe one day a theater promoting German culture will give justice to these 2 works."
(doesn't need to be a German theater !  ;D )

Or it hasn't caught up with YOU, but rather with ME (among others)...  ;D

Oh, perfect CelesteCadenza, then we'll have 2 concerts on the same idea.
After rereading, the only "redundant" piece seems to be the Holmes piece...
There will be other works by Mel Bonis, and the 2nd piano concerto by Jaëll.

PS : I do realize that I have a copy of that concert too. Actually downloaded from Wheesht upload ! The ring is complete at last ! ;)

PS2 : I was probably mistaken by the title "Femmes de Légende", which is actually a generic title for an ongoing series of concerts around Women Composers, with various programs...

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Bru Zane future plans
Thursday 24 March 2022, 11:40
Of course, quite a bit has happened with the PBZ since the last post in this thread, most of which has been dealt with in specific threads, but I thought it would be useful to post here the updates on PBZ projects for the coming season (concerts and recordings).

After recent issues of recordings of O Mon Bel Inconnu, L'Ile du Rêve, La Fille de Madame Angot, Phryné, La vie Parisienne (on YT), Les Abencerages (soon on YT I think, and later as a 2 CD set), a 2-CD set of complete Franck songs and duets, the following projects are on track, or to be issued soon :
-- MEYERBEER's Robert le Diable (recorded in Bordeaux, with Minkowski, featuring Erin Morley)
-- FRANCK's Hulda (Madaras)
-- SPONTINI's La Vestale (Rousset)
-- JONCIERES's Lancelot (Niquet, with the Saint-Etienne Opera forces)
-- OFFENBACH's Voyage dans la Lune (Dumoussaud)
-- BERTIN's Fausto (Rousset, concert on June 20th 2023 at the TCE in Paris)
-- Concert of Women Composers at the TCE on June 23, 2023. (recording to be issued most probably).
-- MASSENET's Hérodiade (Rustioni and the Lyon Opera forces).  Concert at the TCE, and probably recording to be issued).
-- MASSENET's Grisélidis (Zeitouni). Concert at TCE and probably recording to be issued.
-- MASSENET's Ariane (Schirmer ?). Concert and recording in Munich.
-- SAINT-SAËNS's Déjanire.

Previously cancelled projects, HAHN's La Carmélite and THOMAS's Psyché seem to be "on hold" for now, unfortunately.

PS : Forgot a production of HOLMES's La Montagne Noire in Dortmund, during next season.

This concert, which I think had been cancelled due to Covid, has been reprogrammed, with a similar (but different in details) program, on June 23rd 2022 at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées (Paris)

As a reminder, les Frivolités Parisiennes has alreadu issued a number of excellent world premieres recordings of some French forgotten works : Don César de Bazan (Massenet), Le Diable à Paris (Lattès), and they are actually preparing a stage production of Maurice Yvain's La-Haut, of which one can hope for a CD recording later on, with the excellent quality of all the previous albums.

Naxos has just issued Roussel's operetta Le Testament de la Tante Caroline.
First commercial recording of a work that was only known through (private) recordings from the French radio.
A welcome addition to the general public knowledge of this delightful French light répertoire.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Saint-Saëns Phryné
Thursday 03 March 2022, 20:17
"There are several uploads of "Phryné" on Youtube but I think they are all of the same performance....one dating from 1960 conducted by Jules Gressier."

Indeed.  But I will upload soon an excellent version by Andrée ESPOSITO (Phryné), Nadine SAUTEREAU (Lampito), Louis MUSY (Dicéphile), Rémi CORAZZA (Nicias), Jacques MARS (Arogagine), Gérard FRIEDMANN (Cynalopex)
Ch.Orch.Radio-Lyr.RTF: Eugène BIGOT, which in my (humble) opinion, is better even than the Gressier (at least vocally !).
And Corazza is far better than the pale Cyrille Dubois in the recent PBZ recording.
Stay tuned....

People can always ask Alexandre Dratwicki through his FB page.  He's very cordial and eager to give news when/if he can.

"that rare thing, a full opera by a self-taught amateur composer "
Like Joplin's Treemonisha, you mean ?
:D

Wow, there are still composers I'd never heard of ?  ;)
With an impressive catalogue, too !  Hope this new recording and future release will suscitate curiosity about his works.

Adriano's mention of Douglas Moore reminded me that I've been looking for so long for his Ballad of Baby Doe recording with Beverley Sills.  It looks quite impossible to find, but maybe some kind soul here might have that treasure in store...

By "we don't know", I meant, obviously, through recordings, official or not.
It seems that even the French Radio has recorded nothing except Le Chemineau.
