Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Vierne piano works
Thursday 02 September 2021, 03:47
What a wonderful way to belatedly celebrate Vierne's 150th anniversary from 2020. The two sets already in existence (the Arion set mentioned by jdperdrix with Georges Delvallée, and Olivier Gardon, released on Timpani in 1995) aren't actually 'complete' as they omit a handful of previously unpublished works which feature in Bärenreiter's 'Complete Works' edition, released in the past decade.  Let's hope these missing works are recorded as part of the Naxos set even though Sergio has utilised the first editions for Volume 1, according to the inlay card.

cheers,
Daniel

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Reynaldo Hahn Piano Concerto

I agree, it is very 'bitty' - a shame they couldn't have found a rarity to pair with the Hahn PC, as it is such a good work.

What a truly extraordinary fellow! Does anyone know what became of the material he amassed?

best wishes,

My copy is on its way from Presto; hurry up, air post! On Boëllmann, some may be interested to know I've been working on a parallel FR/EN edition of a biography, originally published in French in 1901. The goal is to have it published by year's end - I'll obviously let the board know once it is available, as, given the interest in this recording, there may be a few interested in purchasing it.

cheers,
Daniel

I am very much looking forward to hearing this disc when it arrives. A sad point to note, conductor Patrick Davin passed away last September. :(

Composers & Music / Re: Some 2021 unsung concerts
Friday 26 February 2021, 00:59
For those in Melbourne, Australia, Harold Fabrikant is re-embarking on his series of three concerts covering the complete piano works of Louis Vierne (1870-1937). The series, planned to commemorate Vierne's 150th birthday in 2020, had to be aborted after the first concert, due to you-know-what. Concert dates and works are given below; the concerts are in Melba Hall at the Parkville campus and entry is free, but booking is essential. The booking link is here and the password is PIANO21

I concur, it is a superb disc - Wee is definitely one to watch! His Alkan disc from earlier this year is also highly recommended.

Though I haven't heard the Chailly recording, I have to agree with your comments on the Wilson/Sinfonia of London recording. The captured sound is first-rate and the playing is inspired and full-bodied, with a huge amount of energy. Highly recommended!

Daniel

Composers & Music / Re: Harold Darke 1888-1976

Having seen the manuscript of the Phantasie, it is certainly very worthy of performance/recording. I'm currently preparing a typeset edition that would enable such a performance to take place...watch this space!

QuoteI don't think you mention a splendid Symphony in G minor (1936-37) by Percy Whitlock (1903-1946). It is written in a highly romantic style with prominent organ:
I must thank joelingaard for making me aware of this work by Whitlock. It is indeed composed in romantic style. I have confused this composer with the similarly named William Lovelock (1899 - 1986), who also wrote an organ-orchestra work Concert Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, which is a modernistic work.

Might I beg to offer an alternative opinion of William Lovelock's Sinfonia Concertante? It has long been a favourite of mine - I think it is highly late-Romantic in nature. Anyone curious can listen to the only available recording here. I certainly think it is a neglected masterpiece. Though in manuscript, I have permission from his descendants to create a performing edition.

cheers,
Daniel
