Kempff and Von Henselt: Concertante works for piano and orchestra

[Ilja]

Available from Presto Classical but it didn't crop up here yet so far as I could see, and performed by Rüdiger Steinfatt with a Youth Orchestra from Taiwan and conductor Joe Yamaji.

To my knowledge, this is the first recording of Wilhelm Kempff's Legende, combined with what looks like a positively glacial performance of the Henselt concerto.

And sounds it, from the soundbites. Leaden and plodding. No thank you! And the Legende sounds as if it has been recorded in a bathroom down the corridor from the auditorium.

In fact, I was already familiar with that recording, but had unquestioningly assumed it to be an archival thing from the early 1960s or thereabouts. It's pretty dire.
