It's a fine piece in what is obviously Dubois's later style. The slow movement has a very appealing sense of melancholy - almost Elgarian. Not bad for an 86 year-old composer!

Just as a minor point, the symphony is actually from 1915. See here:

and in particular the date at the end of the score. It was however published in 1923, and by then Dubois will certainly have added the dedication to the memory of Saint-Saëns.

It seems that all of Dubois' symphonies were written after his 70th birthday. That's quite a productive retirement!

Thank you for drawing attention to this fine symphony, Alan, with its markedly Elgarian combination of nobilmente and wistfulness. It doesn't appear to have been recorded, which I feel is a tragedy.
