Composers & Music / Dream of Gerontius
Tuesday 12 March 2013, 17:37
I know, Elgar's not unsung, but the Dream is pretty much unknown.  Especially here in the colonies.  So for those, like me, whose favorite oratorio is this one - The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is performing it on May 31 and June 1.  Looks like some tickets are still available.

Composers & Music / Eduard Schütt (1856-1933)
Monday 25 February 2013, 17:32
I ran across this YouTube performance of Schütt's Piano Quartet in F, opus 12 and thought it might be of interest.  Apparently he was a prolific Russian/german/austrian composer.

Would be interested in your thoughts about Schütt??

Not sure where to put this.  This site has been mentioned several times in different threads and I find it useful to occasionally find music unavailable elsewhere.

My question is, there seem to be threads where there is no visible download link..  At least, I can't see one.  For example, today on page 3 is a recording of early Mendelssohn Piano Quartets.  But I can't find the link altho several people has said "thanks".   What am I missing?  Christopher, perhaps?

Thanks

Thanks,  Mark, for another enjoyable foray into the unknown.  A delightful piece if not terribly profound.

Keep 'em coming, please.

Suggestions & Problems / Virus Alert
Saturday 08 September 2012, 04:47
A couple of hours ago I went to a website that was suggested for a download under the topic Joseph Marx Nature Trilogy, a topic that I started a couple of days ago.  The site is HDTRACKS.   After listening to a sample, I tried to join and was immediately greeted with the FBI trojan.  This gem locks up your computer tighter than a drum, sez you have violated copyright law and are being fined $200 which you can apparently pay by clicking on a button.  Knowing that this is nonsense I didn't bite.   However, you can't get into your computer and rebooting simply brings this nasty back up.

It took a couple of hours to figure out how to get rid of it and if I hadn't had a good anti malware program installed, I might not be writing this.

So just beware, that site may be lethal.

Composers & Music / Joseph Marx Nature Trilogy
Thursday 06 September 2012, 20:06
Not sure where to put this - I'm working on a video and need some good background music and have used Marx before.  But I have no recording here in CO of any of it.  Does anyone know where I can get a download of that old CD?  Amazon gets one excited about an MP3 download but then when you bring it up, it sez "not available".  Thanks for that, Amazon......any suggestions?  Thanks.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Constantino Gaito on CPO
Monday 06 August 2012, 02:47
I'm assuming this is a new release - Piano Trio, Piano Quintet and Cello Sonata, all pretty firmly entrenched in the Romantic style.  Available from Classics Online.

Argentina 1878-1945

Suggestions & Problems / Trojan
Wednesday 02 May 2012, 13:59
I don't know if this is appropriate, but this morning on two separate downloads from Mediafire, McAffee warned and removed a Trojan that came with it.  Sorry I didn't gethe nameof it, started with "JS"......something or other.  Just in case you don't have an anti virus program in place.  I guess trojans are not life threatening but are better off dealt with.

Suggestions & Problems / A Place of our own??
Tuesday 10 January 2012, 15:58
Just out of curiosity, judging from the number of uploads that seem to be disappearing from MediaFire and other sources, I don't suppose there is some way we could establish our own, private place to upload the treasures that we have?

Probably too expensive or too much work, but just a thought.....

Yah, I know that Tchaikovsky isn't unsung, but this piece appears on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rqsu8UnZVQ&feature=g-all-u&context=G2421cafFAAAAAAAAIAA

Is this something that Tchaikovsky actually DID or is it someone else work?  Or what?

Downloads Discussion Archive / George Frederick Bristow
Sunday 16 October 2011, 17:34
I have Bristow #6 by the same ensemble, same old Karl Krueger, etc.  I think there's a current Detroit Symphony performance available on CD.

But 1, 3 and 5 seems to be hard to find.....

Composers & Music / Concertos and such for film scores
Saturday 24 September 2011, 15:22
As I was doing a little research on Oscar Levant for the thread about him, I was thinking (incorrectly, as it turned out) that he had played a part in the 1947 film Night Song.   I first saw this film in a horrible 16mm print for early television when I was a teen.  And really fell for the piano concerto, the "Concerto for Sweeney" that the blind composer Dana Andrews couldn't seem to complete.  And I had not paid attention to the credits to see who actually wrote the concerto.  It was performed, at the conclusion of the film by Artur Rubinstein with the NY Phil. under Ormandy.  An impressive thing for a 17 year old....

Well I wrote to Mr. Ormandy in Philadelphi to ask who composed it and if it had been recorded commercially.  I got a very kind note back; he knew nought of a recording but told me that Leith Stevens (1909-1970) had written the concerto and it was Piano Concerto in c.  He also gave me Mr. Stevens address in California.  So being a persistent teen, I wrote to him.  No, sadly, his concerto had never been recorded - it was written in 1947 during a musicians strike and union leader Petrillo had put a ban on any recording of the work.  As I recall, they had defied Petrillo  and went ahead with the film and that's what p'd him off.  Stevens said he had tried for over 20 years to get the ban lifted, without success.   I just read the NY Times review of the film - he hated the music and about all he did like was Hoagy Carmichael's role as Andrews friend and mentor......

It finally got done, again sadly, after Mr. Stevens death.   If you've never heard it, the clip from the film is on YouTube - 1947 sound, of course.  And they chopped about 2 minutes off of the ten and a half minute concerto.  The CD is still available and is complete.

Nothing profound, but I still like it.  And beware, the film is a real tear jerker.

Sorry for the ramble.....there has been a lot of interesting music written for films and not much of it has been taken very seriously.  Perhaps there's room for some discussion here.

Downloads Discussion Archive / Italian Music
Friday 23 September 2011, 14:02
Since we now have an Italian Download folder, why not a discussion one as well?

Thanks to Amphissa for the downloads.  I didn't download the Martucci Concerto as I already have 3 different recordings of that piece - that should be enough.   I love Martucci's music, however - his two Piano Trios and the Piano Qquintet in C are among my very favorite chamber works.

I'm also fascinated by the violin and cello sonatas of Leone Sinigaglia and am wondering if anyone has tapes or other recordings of his music - perhaps the Violin Concerto or other works for violin and orchestra.  Or ????  Judging from the number of recordings, he is VERY unsung.....

Suggestions & Problems / Unread posts - some are showing up
Saturday 10 September 2011, 20:47
This seems odd.  In recent days I've noticed that some of the Downloads-Register to Post are not showing up in the Unread posts list.   Today only the new Music for 9/11 was there.

I read the newest post in the French Download Discussion section and discovered something had been uploaded, for example.  Iwent to the download section and sure 'nuf, it was there.....

Not a big deal but it is a bit annoying.

Downloads Discussion Archive / Roumanian Music
Friday 02 September 2011, 14:15
Thanks, A.S. for the Polish and Roumanian downloads today.  Taking the time to do this is much appreciated I'm sure by all of us.

Question:  Do you know if the Paul Richter Piano Concerto is the Opus 58 in b minor?  I assume it probably is but being away from home, I can't make a comparison.

Thanks, Jerry
