Depressing to read from a group that's made so many good recordings of more recent music (Rubbra eg) this line though "new generations with new ears have now rejected the baggage of post-WW1 generations"

To be fair, it's Jeremy Dibble who said it, not Krysia Osostowicz.

I uploaded a short Romance for strings broadcast by the BBC a couple of days ago.
The story how this recording came about is told by the announcer at the beginning.

Recordings & Broadcasts / Re: Borodin Mlada Finale

I see there is some inconsistency concerning the date of Rimsky's orchestration. The youtube video gives 1890.
I referred to the wikipedia list:

Quoteshows what can happen when a woman is inspired by a male pseudo-philosopher (whether his name be Brewster or another) instead of God.

Sexism coupled with bigotry.
For what has Ethel Smyth fought all her life?!

Thank you very much, Mark! I hadn't encountered this recording before.

Austrian radio Oe1 broadcast the first movement of Egon Kornauth's 1917 Piano Quartet recently.
It was first broadcast in a program called "Moderne Stunden" in 1952 alongside music by Hindemith and Schönberg.
This is such a charming piece that I thought I'd share it. The main subject is very memorable.
To make matters worse, the composer works heavily with it so you will end up with a nasty earworm.
What makes it so memorable?
It's more of a motto than a theme I think, the note values become gradually smaller which gives it a forward thrust.

Recordings & Broadcasts / British Clarinet Concertos
Tuesday 14 April 2020, 21:13
Dear members!
By chance I found this notice of a forthcoming recording:
https://www.tashmina.co.uk/news/robert-plane-to-record-with-bbc-scottish-and-martyn-brabbins/
The main interest of this board will be the concerto by Richard Walthew.
The notice is from April 2019 so the recordings should already have taken place.

You are welcome!
The symphony is a lightweight I think but it's nice to have such tender solace during those times.

BTW, the announcer mentioned SIX symphonies, all planned to be recorded by the Biel SO.

Dear members,

I would like to turn your attention to the following broadcast of Cipriani Potter's Symphony No. 1.

Do you know more about this? Perhaps a complete cycle of recordings in the making?

Composers & Music / Re: Friedrich Hegar's "Manasse"
Saturday 28 March 2020, 23:22
Dear members,

a couple of years ago our member mahesi kindly sent me two CDs containing the "Hymne an die Musik", the oratorio "Manasse", and the cello concerto by Friedrich Hegar.
I have now converted these to mp3 files and uploaded two zip files to mediafire. The first file includes also a text file with information about the performers.
The oratorio is divided into several tracks, some of which consist just of audience noise. I just want to mention this in case you should wonder about it.

Thanks again, mahesi!

Composers & Music / Re: Tor Aulin

Eric countered Santo's bold statement very diplomatically, but I must protest vehemently: both of Valborg Aulin's quartets combine excellent craftsmanship with inspired material. They are memorable and  surprise me anew every time I listen to them.
I don't know the recording by the Kjellstrom Quartet but the one done by the Tale Quartet for Musica Sveciae is impeccable.

Thanks, Gareth!
Guess I did right in cutting short my musicology studies some twenty years ago...
Will upload the file tomorrow.

Dear members,

last Sunday MDR Kultur broadcast a Nonet by Gustav Schreck.
I would like to upload the recording but hesitate for two reasons.
The announcer told that it was recorded by members of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonie Gera-Altenburg for the MDR.
I am not sure if this is a coproduction with a record label. In that case an upload would discourage potential buyers.
I know, this is not handled that strictly here at UC so you might talk me round...

Another more troubling question: this is NOT the Nonet op. 40 but another unpublished one for strings and wind quintet.
The announcer didn't give an opus number nor a key nor a date of composition. She explained that it was performed from a fair copy located at the Leipziger Bach Archiv.
I tried to google for more information - in vain so far.
Perhaps there are members around with better sleuthing skills?

Thank you, Mark, for taking the trouble!
