It is indeed true that work descriptions in the booklet don't always match with what is played in the Ondine recording. Probably the writer didn't have a chance to hear record masters and he worked from the manuscript scores only.

Yes, the performance will be based on the Melartin Society edition of the symphony.

Grin recording and all older archival recordings cuts bars 286-297 in the first movement. And in the fourth movement Grin cuts bars 271-288, to my knowledge Grin is the only recording where there is a cut in the fourth movement.

I think 6th symphony in the Ondine set is the only symphony recorded without cuts. 1st and 3rd symphony have suffered most, and in the 4th symphony they leave out whole recapitulation in the 1st movement! Rondo-finale has also little left of the rondo form

Style is a mix of Debussy, Ravel and some R. Strauss thrown in. Vocal lines remind me of Janacek. While I was listening the rehearsals, I found myself thinking of Szymanowski's Krol Roger too.

Just before this opera, Raitio wrote ballet 'Vesipatsas' (1929), recorded for Ondine in 1992 (Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra). This ballet is not too far from opera but still opera is a bit more stylistically conservative.

Tomorrow there is broadcast of opera "Prinsessa Cecilia" (Princess Cecilia) by Finnish Väinö Raitio (1891-1945). Performance of forgotten opera, first time since 1937. It is considered one of the most important works of his. Opera was composed from 1930 to 1933. At the time, it was performed only 6 times. And this is the first performance of the opera without cuts. This is concert performance.

It tells story of Gustav Vasa's daughter, Cecilia (1540-1627).

I was at the performance yesterday and it was truly a splendid evening. More inspired than the BIS recording (which is pretty good).  The conductor, Klaus Mäkelä, is very young, born in 1996! This performance was his debut at the Finnish National Opera.

By the way, this year there are quite a number of performances of Melartin's music in Finland. At the end of the June Leif Segerstam will conduct Traumgesicht and Marjatta at Heinävesi Music Festival. Then on 2.8. Korsholma Music Festival has performance of 5th Symphony with Ari Rasilainen. 27.10. (Tampere Philharmonic) and 24.11. (Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra) Hannu Lintu is conducting Traumgesicht.

Yes, the original libretto is in German. Spengler and Müller-Berghaus read German translations of Kalevala, there were two complete translations (1852 and 1886) available at that time. Müller-Berghaus composed his opera between 1888-1890. I must say it is quite loosely based on the epic.
