Warner is going to reissue (April 6) a 10-CD "Pierné Edition", with past recordings from their catalog, including the complete piano works by Diane Andersen, which had never been reissued on CD before (in spite of my many requests to EMI !).
Of course, we would have loved an exploration of his operatic catalogue or a good modern recording of Saint-François d'Assise, but that will still have to wait... Let's enjoy what we'll be given.

Quote from: edurban on Tuesday 28 February 2023, 17:48Starting July 26 there will be a run of staged performance of Saint-Saens' grand opera.  Eleven years ago, Botstein led a gripping concert performance of this fine work (somewhat let down by an inadequate Henry), we hope for even better this time.  Tickets go on sale to the public March 9.

There will also be this spring a run of staged performances at Brussels' Monnaie, directed by Olivier Py.  Probably a recording for the Palazzetto Bru Zane too.

Quote from: dmitterd on Thursday 23 February 2023, 20:34Readers may be interested to know that Vierne orchestrated various movements (the Scherzo from the Second Symphony, Adagio from the Third Symphony and the Final from the First Symphony) from his organ symphonies into a Pièce Symphonique. It looks like the recording is now out of print but I imagine second hand copies can be found on Ebay, etc. More information here: https://ohscatalog.org/louis-vierne-volume-4-christine-kamp-and-orchestra/

cheers,
Daniel

Interesting to know.  I've always thought that these symphonies -- and some other show-off pieces, could show their best through an efficient orchestration (for orchestra only, without organ). I've always wanted to tackle an orchestration of the 2nd Symphony (my favorite), but I'm afraid I'll probably keep it as a "retirement project"...  ;D

And this new version just came out in February.

Quote from: Alan Howe on Monday 06 February 2023, 17:47Sometimes it's best to leave a particular composer to the few who might appreciate him/her. I have a feeling that Tournemire falls into this category.

Nice to see that I'm not the only one....

Yep !!! And we are grateful that the 3 productions of this Festival have been broadcast (La Tempesta and Lalla Roukh, already).

Sadly, Lancelot hasn't been recorded, during the performances in Saint-Etienne....   :'(  Only 2 excerpts are available on YT.

In the previous list, no mention of Cherubini's Les Abencerages, which was just issued on a 3-CD album... But all the others are apparently still on, with the addition of a WERTHER, in the barytone version, sung by Tassis Christoyannis.

Good. I did a search, and it was worthwhile.  I agree on pretty much all points of the discussion, and there were valuable comments on the "politicisation of the arts" (and music particularly).  One further example of this is how we have recently seen blossoming a dig for "ukrainian composers" (Silvestrov ?), or on some YT videos the mention that such and such composer previously known as a "russian composer" suddenly needed an extra comment on "born in Ukraine"...
Anyway... (sigh  ::) ....)

Oh so sorry I missed that.  Didn't mean to wave the red cape ! ;)

Florence Price seems to be the new "thing" à la mode.  We had her "concert overture #2", a few days ago in concert in Rouen... I was not impressed...

"but it was decided to create a new piece in the style of French post-Romantic opera - instead of recurring to the original score. Bernard Herrmann supplied a wonderful and gorgeously orchestrated piece!"
Which sounds furiously like a Massenet piece !

"and recorded  in 1974 by Kiri Te Kanawa."
Here's another gorgeous version by Venera Gimadieva at the Prom's :

A not very infernal inferno, but a pleasant "post-wagnerian" score.

Composers & Music / Re: Amadeo Vives: Bohemios

I always find Hurwitz unbearable with his screechy voice and hysteria. 16 "unknown" operas ? To him, perhaps....
But yeah, Bohemios is one of many jewels in the (little known, outside Spain) zarzuela repertoire...

Sorry, the 2nd (Australian) one.  I'll have an ear to the 1st link.

WOULD have been very lovely indeed had the chorus been at the required level... I gave up after a few minutes of choral massacre.

I love the comment on the first video : "a beautiful BARITONE voice !" .  From a connoisseur apparently... ;)
